Standout inside linebacker Luke Kuechly signs a mega-deal extension with the Carolina Panthers for 5-years, $62 million. League rumors swirled that an extension would happen prior to the first regular season game. Kuechly was in the fourth and final season of his rookie contract but was picked up for a fifth-year, $11 million option. The $12.4 million annual earnings obliterates Seattle Seahawks Bobby Wagner, who this summer signed a four-year extension at $44 million with $22 million guaranteed.
It was first reported by NFL reporter Rand Getlin early this afternoon on Twitter:
The #Panthers and Luke Kuechly have agreed to terms on a 5-year, $62M contract extension, per a source.

In his four years with the Panthers, Kuechly launched himself as one of the best defensive players in the league racking up 473 tackles, six quarterback sacks, seven interceptions and one forced fumble since entering in 2012. He was the ninth pick in the 2012 draft out of Boston College and has been a First-Team All-Pro each of the last two seasons in the NFL. His amazing sideline to sideline speed has yet to be matched by an inside linebacker.
He was named Defensive rookie player of the year in 2012 and Defensive player of the year in 2013, leading the league in tackles three times. He also received the Butkus Award in 2014. Kuechly is among several linebackers with contract extensions in the off-season. Alongside Wagner, Lavonte David agreed to a five-year, $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His leadership is well respected on his team and in the league. For a young player, Kuechly has taken control of the defense and helped turn it into one of the best defenses in the NFL. There was no doubt the deal was going to happen, it was a matter of what both sides would agree barring any pettiness on minor details. With this agreement, the Panthers have ensured the future of their franchise in a dominant defensive player for years to come.
