Sunday Social: The Religion of College Football

We take a look at the best social media posts from the weekend in Sunday Social: The Religion of College Football

Sunday Social: The Religion of College Football

The first weekend of college football is upon us, and there was plenty of trash-talking and lively conversation on social media. The conversation had religious overtones all weekend. And that’s fitting, with the passion of college football fans.

Baylor and SMU got started a little early with a Friday game. With everything going on in our society, does @HampHickman have to bring up religion during a college football game? Be careful, the Methodists are said to be mean basketball players.

What is it with the religion thing? Hey, Luby’s is a good place to eat.

Of course the star of the show were the SMU Bros:

Baylor’s current arch-rival, TCU, had a tough matchup against Minnesota on the road. Most people thought that the TCU offense would be the toughest unit on the team. Clearly, they haven’t met the Minnesota game day staff and the jumbo-tron operators.

Of course no dive in the social media cesspool would be complete without a couple of trolling Tweets from rival fans. This Baylor fan has a commentary about their thoughts on TCU’s #2 ranking:

This TCU fan watched the same game and had a completely different perspective. These two tweets next to each other is exactly why college football is the best!

Boise State and Washington provided us a Friday night main event that lived up to its billing. “The Petersen Bowl”, as it was Chris Petersen’s first return to Boise since he left to take over at Washington, had some fans suggesting that Petersen would have been better staying in Boise.

They’ve obviously never lived in Seattle. Can you say Chilean Sea Bass?

Preseason polls are always controversial. One of our favorites, The Ernst Report, takes exception to Boise State’s rankings after their performance against Washington:

Things got a little personal for Louisville’s lightning rod coach Bobby Petrino, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons (for about five minutes), as he had some clock management hiccups in Louisville’s upset attempt against Auburn. The always-astute Stewart Mandel of Fox Sports sees a parallel between Petrino’s end in the Georgia Dome last night and his previous end in the Georgia Dome.

But the real hot topic from Atlanta was the Cardinals’ uniforms. David Hale of ESPN had this hilarious take:

The “I thought this was European Football” award of the week goes to this Bowling Green defensive lineman, who had the most epic shoe removal injury ever against Tennessee:

Again, I don’t understand why people have to mingle religion with football, as Wisconsin fans think they may have a new … um, leader?

While Chryst couldn’t split the Crimson Tide, Kenyan Drake had a nice game. Has @bama_nurse found Drake’s secret to success? I will admit, Little Debbie Oatmeal cookies are delicious.

And of course, we can’t leave out @Buckeyesnews, who wanted to get some ribbing in over the weekend even tough his team doesn’t play until Monday. He had a idea for the marketing of the Alabama-Wisconsin matchup:

Professional golfer Jordan Spieth, a Texas alum, comes from the top rope with some self-deprecating humor:

BYU provided some excitement with a Hail Mary TD to upset Nebraska. And this receiver had the best reaction:

And BYU’s head coach could barely contain himself:

There you have it. There’s lots of great stuff out there, but this is what caught our eye while watching a great first weekend of college football.

As the season goes along it’s only going to get better as rivalries produce arguments and sniping. Fasten your seatbelts, fans, the season is upon us!
