What to watch for: Northern Iowa @ Iowa State

Northern Iowa travels to Ames once again to take on Iowa State in the season opener for both squads.

How they stack up

Northern Iowa enters the season ranked 10th in the nation in the FCS rankings, as well as coming off a 9-5, FCS Playoff birth season. Iowa State will try to rebound a 2-10 year.

The Last Time Out

UNI took on Iowa State in the 2013 season opener at Jack Trice Stadium, winning 28-20 in front of a sold out cardinal and gold crowd. Northern Iowa established their extraordinary run game with now-NFL Running Back, David Johnson. Johnson ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

The new Jack Trice Stadium

Iowa State started an expansion project at the conclusion of the 2013 football season to “bowl in” the South End Zone. The expansion project raised the capacity of the stadium to 61,500.

Who Starts for the Panthers?

When Northern Iowa revealed it’s depth chart for this Saturday’s game, the Panthers listed not one, but four starting quarterbacks. Among the group is Senior, Sawyer Kollmorgen, who has enough experience to be a logical guess for a starter. The former all-MVFC QB beat Iowa State in the 2013 matchup, completing 21 of 28 passes.

Already a must-win?

Iowa State has found themselves in what could be a must win to start the year off. Team morale seems to be higher than it’s ever been and this one will get the momentum going, one way or another.

Will a LanRam make an appearance?

Iowa State coaches have commented multiple times that Ankeny native, Joel Lanning, will get on the field somehow this season. A popular opinion seems to be Lanning being used as a short range QB similar to Blake Bell’s days at Oklahoma.
