Los Angeles Kings defenceman Slava Voynov was taken into custody Wednesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Voynov had been in jail since July 7 following his no contest plea to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. After his release, Immigration and Customs Enforcement took him into custody and is holding the Russian citizen pending a hearing by an immigration judge, an agency spokeswoman told The Times.

Voynov was arrested last October following a dispute with his wife, Marta Varlamova, that started at a team Halloween party when he allegedly struck her and continued at the couple’s home.

“According to the victim, she is scared of the defendant and he is very aggressive when he drinks,” Voynov’s probation report said. “She admitted this was not the first time the defendant has struck her.”

Attorneys for the couple called the incident an accident.

Voynov has been suspended by the Kings with pay since his arrest.

Voynov, 25, has played 190 games with the Kings, and was part of the Cup winning clubs in both 2012 and 2014. Voynov was suspended on October 20th, 2014 by the National Hockey League, making him unable to play for the Kings in the 2014-15 NHL regular season in which the Kings missed the playoffs. The National Hockey League fined the Los Angeles Kings $100,000 for allowing suspended defenceman Slava Voynov to practice with the team on December 2nd, 2014, which head coach Daryl Sutter claimed he thought was fine due to it being an optional skate. Despite legal trouble, Slava Voynov is still under contract with the Los Angeles Kings unlike forward Mike Richards.
