Arsenal on Loan: Zelalem’s Rangers Debut

Gedion Zelalem's Rangers Debut showed why Arsenal and USMNT fans are so excited for the youngster, who has three assists in his first two games.

This season Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side.

There are currently twelve players out on loan from Arsenal:

  • Carl Jenkinson (RB), on loan to West Ham United in the Premier League
  • Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Ajax in the Eredivisie
  • Serge Gnabry (MID), on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League
  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
  • Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
  • Daniel Crowley (MID), on loan to Barnsley in League One
  • Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birgmingham City in the Championship
  • Emiliano Martinez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
  • Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
  • Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship

This past week, eight Arsenal players made appearances for their loan clubs.

Wojciech Szczesny started for Roma as they defeated Italian Champions Juventus 2-1. Szczesny was forced into making only one save as Roma dominated Juve for most of the match. However, the save was a spectacular one, as he stopped Leonardo Bonucci’s 92nd minute header in fine style.

Carl Jenkinson missed West Ham’s 3-0 win at Liverpool due to suspension, after he was sent off against Bournemouth a week previously.

Yaya Sanogo was once again an unused substitute as Ajax won 4-0 against ADO Den Haag. After making substitute appearances earlier this month, this was Sanogo’s second consecutive match without coming off the bench.

Serge Gnabry played 57 minutes for West Brom in their penalty shoot-out win over Port Vale in a midweek Capital One Cup game, and was regarded by many fans as the lone bright spot in the first half. Gnabry was an unused substitute at the weekend as the Baggies beat Stoke 1-0.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles started, but came off at half-time, as Ipswich suffered their first loss of the season, losing 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Chuba Akpom started and played 83 minutes, with two attempts on goal, before being replaced by fellow loanee Isaac Hayden, in Hull’s 2-0 win over Preston North End. Hayden was bright in his limited minutes, completing both of his attempted take-ons, completing ten out of eleven passes and forcing a save.  Hayden also completed the full 90 minutes in Hull’s 1-0 Capital One Cup win over Rochdale.

Dan Crowley came on at half-time in Barnsley’s 3-0 loss to Rochdale over the weekend. Crowley also went the full 120 minutes of Barnsley’s 5-3 Capital One Cup loss to Everton, scoring Barnsley’s third goal, which at the time gave them a 3-2 lead over the Premier League side.

Jon Toral played 54 minutes for Birmingham City as they won 2-0 at MK Dons. Toral did create a goalscoring chance which his teammate failed to finish, but was loose in possession, completing only 50% of his passes on the day.

Emiliano Martinez was an unused substitute in Wolves’ 2-1 win against Charlton. Martinez did play in their 2-1 Capital One Cup victory over Barnet, coming up with a vital save in the dying moments of the game to preserve the victory.

Wellington Silva played 79 minutes as Bolton drew 0-0 with Blackburn. The 22-year-old was lively, creating two chances and being heavily involved in the buildup.

Gedion Zelalem’s Rangers debut came last week, and the midfielder completed the full 90 minutes in both of his first two matches. In midweek Cup action for his debut, Rangers beat Scottish League One side Airdrie 5-0. Zelalem notched two assists within the first fifteen minutes, and was influential throughout in his role as a deep-lying playmaker. On Sunday, in the Scottish Championship, Zelalem was again brilliant as Rangers defeated Queen of the South 5-1, with the 18-year-old notching another assist. The Berlin-born midfielder’s fast start has Rangers blogs abuzz with excitement, and provided encouragement that there are good things to come from the youngster. Perhaps most importantly, his 180 minutes in two appearances is a clear indication that Rangers intend to play him regularly.
