Oh Canada! Erik Jones Wins Silverado 250 at CTMP

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is the only nationally touring series that visits Canada during the season. The trucks have a unique history on road courses, and that history gained yet another chapter on Sunday, with the Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

Alex Tagliani (#29 Cooper Standard Ford) was the odds-on favorite to win the race. The runner-up in the Xfinity Series race at Mid Ohio earlier this month, Tagliani raced in the series at CTMP last year, winning the pole and contending for the win. He would start his weekend similarly to how he did it last year too, winning the pole in record fashion.

As the race kicked off, the opening laps would be controlled by the two front-running Canadians in the field, Alex Tagliani and Cameron Hayley (#13 Cabinets by Hayley Toyota). Hayley would use an alternate pit strategy to take the lead, though he would lose a hard battle for the lead near Lap 25 with Tagliani and Cole Custer (#00 Haas Automation Chevy).

While Custer was leading, other drivers further back in the field struggled to adapt to the road course racing. Brian Wong (#25 Momofuku Toyota) and John Wes Townley (#05 Zaxby’s Chevy) would collide on track, and Wong’s struggles continued when he smacked the wall hard with his left side. Meanwhile, Brandon Jones (#33 Exide Chevy) would have a mechanical failure that sent him into the wall with twenty laps to go, bringing out a full-course caution.

On the ensuing restart, the carnage was not over as the laps clicked off. Matt Tifft (#51 Sick Kids Toyota) would crash, as well as points leader Tyler Reddick (#19 Broken Bow Records Ford). Meanwhile, at the front, Cole Custer would spin while in a battle for the lead, handing it over to Erik Jones (#4 Toyota).

On the final restart, Erik Jones would not be challenged. Holding off a fading Alex Tagliani, who would lose a gear on the final lap, Erik Jones would win the Silverado 250 at CTMP. Matt Crafton (#88 Menards Toyota) would come home second, and Ben Kennedy (#11 Local Motors Toyota) in third.

With Tyler Reddick’s struggles on the road course, the points lead shifted dramatically. Jones inherited the lead with his win, and Matt Crafton moved to second in points. This would send Tyler Reddick far back to third, heading into a two-week break.

Following a brief vacation, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be back in action at Chicagoland Speedway. Coverage can be seen from Chicago in two weeks on Fox Sports 1.
