According to Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins, the Redblacks released running back Chevon Walker this morning.
“We made a decision to go with Jeremiah Johnson. His stats aren’t there but everything he brings to the table, his style of running, we feel is better suited to what we want to do,” said Desjardins.
He went on to say, “The main reason Jeremiah is playing right now is because he will hit the holes that are there, where Chevon would attempt to bounce it outside and trying to hit that home run and we want someone who will be decisive and do what the play calls for as opposed to trying to stretch things out. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is where he was last year. Saving money has nothing to do with this move.”
Walker was signed originally in 2012 by the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Left unprotected by the Ticats, Walker was acquired by the Redblacks in the 2014 expansion draft.
The four-year veteran of the NCAA’s Sioux Falls Cougars has amassed 1594 yards rushing on 327 carries, adding an additional 816 on 86 receptions.
Walker tweeted about his release this morning.
Nothing but love and appreciation for #RNATION #partthegame

This is the first of the high profile veterans that will be cut in 2015 as clubs try and find the right mix of players at the right price.
Speaking of Price, is the non-productive post-Calgary WR Maurice Price the next to be dropped by the Ottawa Redblacks?
Back to Walker. Which team is in need and has the financial and ratio flexibility to sign the diminutive running back? Outside of future injury, no team will likely require the services of Walker for the remainder of the 2015.
