OTPP: Giordano and Ehrhoff Signings, NHL Expansion, the Habs PP and More

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

This week Dave and Ben look at two defencemen inking new contracts.  Mark Giordano has signed a six-year deal with the Calgary Flames.  The boys look at the Flames defence and if its the best in the NHL.  They examine how this will help Calgary’s young forwards like Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Sam Bennett continue to develop.  They also look at the fact that Giordano’s deal ends when he is 39 years old.  Is the deal too long?  Will the Flames regret it down the road?

The boys also look at Christian Ehrhoff signing with the Los Angeles Kings, and how the defenceman will fit in with their philosophy.  They examine the impact he could have on the powerplay, and its questionable.  Sure he was great in Vancouver, but he did not do much in Pittsburgh and Buffalo.  Can he regain his form, and where does he fit on the Kings depth chart for the powerplay.

Next we examine the impact of Quebec and Las Vegas advancing to stage three of the NHL’s expansion process.  What does it mean, and how soon could these teams be in the league.

The boys also look at the impact of new hire Craig Ramsay on the Habs powerplay.  They discuss coaching philosophies and explore the fact that some coaches have a coaching style that is completely opposite to their playing style.  They give examples and reasons for this.

All this and more, in this week’s edition of On the Power Play.
