With the Sprint Cup Series off for their summer break this weekend, the focus of the racing world shifts to the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series. And as Xfinity teams tackle Road America, and the Trucks move north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, here are the four to follow, storylines for this weekend’s NASCAR road racing.
Where’s the weather?
NASCAR has a unique set of rules for road course racing for all nationally touring series, being that the series can race in the rain using rain tires and additional tools. However, the sanctioning body has not been able to use the rule at all this season, but that could change this weekend at Road America. There is a fifty-fifty chance of rain at the track, which could pose yet another challenging race for the Xfinity drivers.
Drama!
The NASCAR Xfinity Series is coming off of three eventful weeks, with two prior road course races and the Bristol Motor Speedway in the rearview mirror. The Camping World Truck Series rolls into Canada after their stop at Bristol as well, and road course racing has frequently proven to be a great place for some payback by drivers who were wronged in previous weeks.
Road Ringers versus Seasoned Vets
As reported on earlier this season, the road course ringers in NASCAR are a quickly and quietly dying breed. Considering that the last race for the Xfinity Series at Road America was won by Brendan Gaughan, and the Trucks race by Ryan Blaney, this could mean the ringers are out of the running for wins this weekend. The one exception may be Alex Tagliani, the runner up in the Xfinity Series at Mid Ohio a few weeks ago, now running at home in Canada.
When the Fat Lady Sings
Speaking of Tagliani, he was on the wrong side of a bump and run at Mid Ohio, giving the victory to Regan Smith in the Xfinity Series. These types of incidents help build the drama at the end of road course races. Will race fans see another bump and run at Road America this weekend? Or will the Trucks wreck out of the final corner at CTMP once more as well?
Be sure to tune in and see the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America on Saturday afternoon on NBCSN. Then check out the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series racing at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on Sunday afternoon on Fox Sports 1.
