It was just a matter of hours for Roger Federer to prove himself an outright favorite for the US Open that begins by the end of this month. The Swiss maestro conquered the Masters 1000 Cincinnati today by beating World #1, Novak Djokovic, in the finals
Federer defeated Djokovic in style. The Swiss beat the Serb by 7-6, 6-3 in the final which was rematch of the Wimbledon final that Djokovic had won in July.
Roger Federer Wins his 7th Cincinnati Title
After losing the Montreal final, it was expected from Djokovic to perform extraordinarily in this Masters 1000 and win the title he has not yet been able to win. He has played five finals in Cincinnati, including today’s, and has lost them all.
Before we go on to further discussions, let me summarize the final for you here.
The first game was won by Djokovic very comfortably but after that, Federer dominated the whole match. He had four break points in the first set but Djokovic saved them. This set was a much competitive one as it went to the tiebreaker which was won by Federer. The set was won by the Swiss by 7-6.
In the second set, Federer went on to get the break early but as he reached 3-0, Novak started giving his best. He pulled back 3 sets but was not able to beat the classy Roger who won the second set by 6-3, hence winning his career’s 7th Masters 1000.
Federer said, “I know it was tough for him (Djokovic) backing up from Wimbledon and Montreal. I’ll try my best to come back here for many more years to come.”
The week had been tremendous for the 34-year-old, who was not broken even once in the tournament and did not lose a single set in the whole tournament.
About the final result, Djokovic said, “Roger played great today and deserved to win. It was my fifth final. I guess I’ve got to wait for Roger to retire.”
My observation says that Roger would be far classier in the US Open this year. Today’s win has promoted him from World #3 to World #2, making Andy Murray the third spot holder.
The thing is that Federer loves playing on the hard courts of the US. He has experience and he is fitter than many. We should expect some great servings from the Swiss maestro in the big tournament.
As for Djokovic, all he needs to do is to work a bit on his fitness. He had a stomach muscle problem in Cincinnati’s semifinal against Alexandr Dolgopolov. Despite all that, he continued his game and made his way through to the finals.
The US Open will certainly pull the best out of him and we might see the Djokovic who beats everyone again.
As World #3 now, we can expect Andy Murray to begin his US Open campaign with a new energy. He would come back even stronger and will do all he can to get as far as he can in the tournament.
Draws of the US Open will be held on 27th August, 2015. Keep your figures crossed as a very exciting US Open is coming soon.
