Arsenal on Loan: Gnabry’s West Brom Debut and Zelalem to Rangers

Wojciech Szczęsny made his debut for Roma in Serie A, as Roma drew 1-1 at Hellas Verona. Szczęsny made four saves, but was unable to keep the clean sheet as Roma drew.

Carl Jenkinson perhaps had the worst weekend of the Gunners on loan, as he was sent off after 78 minutes of West Ham’s 4-3 loss to Bournemouth. West Ham trailed 3-2 when Jenkinson fouled Max Gradel, who was free in on goal, in the box to concede the penalty, which Callum Wilson scored to complete his hat-trick and give Bournemouth a 4-2 lead. Jenkinson was poor prior to his sending off, though he certainly was not the only one; West Ham dropped their second consecutive result following their surprise opening day victory over Arsenal.

Yaya Sanogo did not make an appearance in Ajax’s 2-0 win.

Serge Gnabry came on for the final 12 minutes as West Brom fell 3-2 to Chelsea and was lively. The midfielder looked confident in attack and was clearly eager to make an impact. Gnabry’s West Brom debut didn’t quite have the fairytale ending, as West Brom couldn’t find an equaliser, but the midfielder showed flashes of talent and should be in for more consistent minutes.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles came on in the 62nd minute of Ipswich’s 2-1 win at Preston North End, as Ipswich remained unbeaten to begin the year. The midfielder failed to impress, completing only 38% of his passes.

Chuba Akpom started and played 64 minutes, while Isaac Hayden came on in the 58th minute of Hull’s first loss of the season, as they fell 2-1 to Charlton. Akpom was quieter than in previous performances, attempting only one shot on goal. Hayden on the other hand was dangerous after coming on, completing 97% of his passes, creating a big chance and putting two shots on goal; one of which he put off the post.

Emiliano Martínez did not appear in Wolves 2-0 loss to Cardiff.

Daniel Crowley did not play in Barnsley’s 0-0 draw against Bradford.

Wellington Silva started and went 84 minutes as Bolton drew 1-1 against Nottingham Forest, which saw Bolton remain winless to start their Championship campaign. The Arsenal man was energetic, but ultimately unable to produce a goal.

The loan saga of Gedion Zelalem appeared to draw to a close this weekend; Zelalem was confirmed to be joining Rangers in the Scottish second division, on loan. Rangers’ manager, Mark Warburton, confirmed after the team’s win this weekend that Zelalem would begin training with the club on Monday.
