Becoming the third oldest player to capture a win at a PGA Tour event was never going to be easy, and Davis Love III proved that on Sunday.
The Wyndham Championship does not draw the attention of a major, it never will, but it provided great drama all week. Love III (who is 51 years, 4 months old) found a way to block the noise out to take a lead late on Sunday.
Ending the tournament like he started it, Love III was dialed in for most of the week. He started off well with a six under par score on Thursday, then finishing four under par on Friday. Saturday was not as kind, as he had 13 pars, but could only manage to go one under par on the day.
That put him behind the eight ball just a bit on Sunday, and practically nobody was considering the 54 year old as a serious contender.
Like Thursday, though, Davis III was ready to put up a score that could put some pressure on the guys ahead of him. He did just that with another six under par round, one that was highlighted by two eagles — one on the front and one in the back.
Davis III was not the only headline from the weekend, though.
Runner-up on the weekend was Jason Gore, who had an unlikely story, too. Gore was on his way out of golf altogether recently, applying for Pepperdine’s golf coaching job. When he did not get the job, he came back, and it was a heckuva tournament from him. He shot 62 on Saturday to move up the leaderboard, and gave himself a chance for Sunday’s round. He could not catch Davis Love III, though.
Of course, Tiger Woods put together a solid three-and-a-half rounds together for the first time in a long time. He was 13 under par after the first three rounds, sitting near the top of the leaderboard going into Sunday. He could not find his groove on the front stretch on Sunday, though, and was even through the first nine holes. After a triple-bogey at 11, Woods’ hopes — and season — were effectively done.
Woods had to come in 2nd or better to advance to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He played well under the heightened conditions, and there is something to build off of for next season.
Woods’ Sunday playing partner, Scott Brown, livened things up early with an ace on the par three third hole. Brown couldn’t build off of the momentum, though, as he would find three bogeys on the back to take him out of the running.
