MLS POWER RANKINGS 18 AUGUST 2015

RANK TEAM COMMENTS Last 6 Previous Change
1

LA Galaxy

The Galaxy had a statement win against FC Dallas, and with just a single loss in their last 6 they are hitting their stride at the right time of year. Most encouraging sign was getting the win on the road, just their second this season. 5-1-0 1 0
2

Sporting Kansas City

A comeback win for the ages. Vancouver has been the best road team in MLS this year. On top of that, the Whitecaps have only surrendered more than 2 goals once this season. SKC made a big statement with that result and with plenty of games in hand on all of the other SS contenders. 4-1-1 5 +3
3

New York Red Bulls

Another team that made a big statement this weekend. The Red Bulls kept Giovinco off the scoreboard and nullified the tiny dynamic MVP. Add to that newcomer Veron is starting to show what he brings to the table and the Red Bulls look as deep as they ever have and the schedule is pillow soft from here on out. The rest of the East is on notice. 5-0-1 4 +1
4

FC Dallas

Losing to LA isn’t so bad, but losing two in a row is. Whitecaps will offer another tough test for Dallas who need to keep up the pace or fall out of the playoff hunt. 4-2-0 3 -1
5

Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Hard to feel anything but gutted for the Whitecaps after their last loss. Not only did they blow a big lead, but they fall out of the top spot while doing it. Bouncing back against a struggling Dallas team will be key. 3-2-1 2 -3
6

Portland Timbers

The roller coaster in Portland continues to roll on. Win against RSL was important, but winning on the road is the story here. Portland’s offensive struggles linger though. Just 4 goals in their last 6 games. 2-2-2 13 +7
7

Houston Dynamo

Houston ran into the Revs at precisely the wrong time. Promising stuff from Cubo and Co. but still need to work on the details and manage games on the road a bit better. 3-2-1 7 0
8

Columbus Crew SC

Columbus got some quality time off as they prepare for 3 games in the next 10 days. NYC twice with SKC in the middle. 4-6 points is not out of the question, but they will need to stifle some potent offenses to do it. 3-2-1 8 0
9

New England Revolution

In a month, the Revs will meet up again with the Red Bulls. They will be doing it on the back of a 5 game unbeaten streak. Just watch. 3-2-1 10 1
10

Montreal Impact

Montreal can take control of their destiny by beating Philly this weekend. They have the most games in hand of any team in the league and are already sitting in a playoff spot. Philly, Toronto, and Chicago are up next. 3-2-1 9 -1
11

DC United

Losing to NYC highlights some of the defensive issues DC has had the last two years. Bill Hamid will normally bail them out, but the right offense will continually punish DC and their reliance on MLS 1.0 tactics. 3-3-0 6 -5
12

Colorado Rapids

Colorado had the weekend off, and  now will travel to Chicago in a bid to break a 3-game losing streak. Defense is capable of shutting down Chicago, but can they break through on the other side? Scoring has been a problem for the rapids all year. 3-3-0 11 -1
13

New York City FC

Big win for City could help turn their season around. The road ahead will not be an easy one. Next four they have Columbus x2, LA, and FCD. 2-3-1 14 +1
14

Toronto FC

Toronto had their resolve tested against the Red Bulls and they responded by laying an egg. It isn’t the end of the world, but there is a lot  of questions that need to be answered north of the border. 2-3-1 12 -2
15

Real Salt Lake

RSL was able to stop the bleeding, but it didn’t stop them from losing their 3rd straight. Nat Borchers may have KO’d the Ozymandias. 2-4-0 16 +1
16

Chicago Fire

Chicago showed guts in the draw at Philly, even with all of  shenanigans involved in their tying goal. Kennedy Igboananike showed up in a big way too, and Fire fans will be happy to see more of the same. 1-3-2 15 -1
17

Philadelphia Union

If you are a Union fan and you watch your team blow a lead after what should have been a 90th minute winner it is hard to be optomistic. Is it time for a Curtain call? At least they have the Open Cup. 1-3-2 17 0
18

Seattle Sounders FC

I know we are all saying Giovinco is MVP, but look at what a difference Oba provides to the Sounders.  The Sounders haven’t scored more than 1 in a game since June 13th. Martins changes everything. New additions helped too, but come on now. 1-5-0 19 +1
19

Orlando City SC

The dream isn’t quite dead just yet, but it is in hospice care. Only 2 other playoff teams have played as many games as Orlando. 1-4-1 18 -1
20

San Jose Earthquakes

SKC, DC, LA. What are three letters Earthquake fans would rather not see? Especially when 2 of the 3 are road games. Can’t see the ‘Quakes making the playoffs but maybe they will finish ahead of Houston. 1-4-1 20 0
