Jason Day claims 1st major with runaway win at PGA Championship

Jason Day shot a final-round 67 to claim his 1st major title at the PGA Championship. The Australian set the aggregate major championship scoring record at 20-under par.

Day is the first Australian to win the PGA Championship since Steve Elkington in 1995 at Riviera in a playoff over Colin Montgomerie. Day is also the first Aussie to win a major since Adam Scott’s triumph at the Masters in 2013, also in a playoff over Angel Cabrera.  Jim Ferrier (1947), David Graham (1979), and Wayne Grady (1990) are other Australians who have won the PGA Championship.

“It’s a fantastic record to hold,” said Day, who often grew emotional during interviews after his win. “There’s been such amazing golfers, especially throughout the history of golf, our sport, and to have that record just goes to show the work I’ve put in is paying off.”

Day held a share of the 54 hold lead at tboth the U.S. Open and British Open this season, but could not close the deal at either tournament.  Vertigo did him in at the U.S. Open, while he missed a key putt on 18 at the British Open.  This win exercises the demons of those losses.

Jordan Spieth capped off his remarkable major championship season with a 2nd place finish, finishing at 17-under after a final-round 68. The 22-year old Texan will rise to the #1 spot in the Official World Rankings, taking the top spot from Rory McIlroy, who needed to finish T-6 to stay on top of the pile. He finished 17th after a final-round 69 to finish at 9-under. The American also set the single-season major championship scoring record at 54 under par, breaking Tiger Woods 2000 mark of 53-under par to add to his many records on his ledger set this season.
