Interview with Leicester Tigers’ New Back-Rower Lachlan McCaffrey

After a year at London Welsh, Lachlan McCaffrey looks set to continue his display of skill and strength in the Premiership after signing for Leicester this summer. Hailed by Richard Cockerill as “a good ball carrier, but also a very good footballer” there is no doubt he will enhance an already fiercesome Tigers forward pack. Discussing his ambitions for next season, here is what he had to say at the launch of Leicester’s alternative kit.

What do you think of the new kit?

We’ve got really exciting kits now, the home kit and away kit both nice and comfy to wear and they look good so hopefully fans will like it.

How are you finding your time so far, settling in?

Yeah, it’s been a busy seven weeks but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s a great club, great support and a great group of boys, it’s been really easy for me to settle in.

Last year was your first experience of the Premiership. What did you learn from that to use for this season ahead?

It’s definitely different rugby to Super Rugby back home; playing week in week out is so different that the season back home, especially when you go through the different seasons at the start – it’s quite dry, running rugby and then you get through Christmas and you’ve got to tighten up a bit. The first year experience will definitely help me get my head around this long season ahead.

It’s a long pre-season due to the World Cup, how are you finding that?

Long pre-season which is good for the body, I came off last year and went back to Australia for a month to see some family so it means when round one and these trial games come we’re ready for it. First game against London Irish, the whole body should be fit and raring to go.

There’s a lot of competition in the back row. Do you feel that you can thrive in that environment of healthy competition?

Yeah, I knew that there’s going to be some really top quality back rowers coming here so it’s something to use as motivation to push myself, to be better, to work on different areas. If you’re playing in the back row at Leicester Tigers you know you’re going pretty well.

You played against some of your new team mates in their 2013 Lions tour, how was that experience?

British and Irish Lions are one of the most recognised teams in the world so to be able to play against them for the Force was pretty special. I got to score a try so that was definitely a highlight, something I won’t forget, especially coming up against guys like Manu and top players from England.

What are you most looking forward to next season at Tigers?

Just to hopefully be a part of the match day 23 and contribute to a really successful year – that’s why I came here. Leicester have always prided themselves on being a successful franchise and a successful team and it’s something I want to be a part of.
