If Posh want to have a good season, it is imperative for their better players to perform at their best. Here are Peterborough United’s three most important players.
Ben Alnwick is first by number and also leads in terms of importance. A goalkeeper is always an important position, which is why Alnwick needs to be on top form if Posh want to get promoted this season. In such a physical league, Alnwick needs to be commanding in his box from set pieces, for a moment’s hesitation could end up in conceding a goal as well as being cleared out by the opposition’s centre-back. But, it’s not just his goalkeeping that is important; to be able to organise and communicate clearly with the back four is also a vital role for a keeper, especially with perhaps an uncertain and wobbly Peterborough defence. Alnwick had a solid last season for Posh and was able to demonstrate these qualities, but his performance against Rochdale in their 2-0 defeat perhaps puts a question mark over his aptitude. However, this is just the first of 46 league games yet to play. It must also be said that Alnwick really didn’t have much chance with either of Rochdale’s goals; in truth, they were down to very poor defending.
Poor defending is what Marcus Maddison preys on. Perhaps the most exciting and technical player that Posh have, Maddison could be perceived as a diamond in the rough, but, in some matches, he himself becomes one of the rough. Consistency is a word that is overused, but Maddison really needs to look in the dictionary and apply the definition to his own game. The only trouble with this ex-Newcastle man is that he can often fade out of games all too easily. Sometimes it is a lack of service, but any top player must find a way of getting on the ball in these circumstances. But, this new season will allow Maddison to fully express himself after injury curtailed his performances last season. He certainly is an asset out wide for Posh, with his pace and quick feet coupled with his eye for goal, especially at set pieces.
For the last of Peterborough United’s three most important players, there could be a few candidates. But, after recently transferring to the club, Jack Collison could prove to be a vital player in Posh’s midfield. However, it all lies on his match fitness. West Ham fans will know more than anyone that injury has plagued his career. If he is fit and able to fully recover from his knee injury, then he could provide invaluable experience both on and off the pitch. Now the manager of the Posh under 21s, the 26-year-old’s knowledge of the game could be of great benefit to Posh’s youngsters. Most importantly, on the pitch, his quality and experience should help Posh to improve ball retention and to make the right choices when attacking. Fielding him alongside Michael Bostwick would allow for a fearsome duo: big tackles and interceptions from Bostwick, with Collison having the ability to make the use of possession once it has been regained.
Injury and complacency pose the biggest threat to Posh. If Alnwick, Maddison and Collison can be fit and on form, then Posh’s promotion chances will be bolstered.
