MLS Power Rankings 11 August 2015
RANK | TEAM | COMMENTS | Last 6 | Previous | Change |
1 | LA Galaxy |
Dos Santos had a dream start this week, but if the Galaxy are going to stay at number 1, they are going to have to get better on the road. If they can secure home field advantage for the playoffs, look out. | 4-2-0 | 1 | 0 |
2 |
Vancouver Whitecaps FC |
Whitecaps stomped RSL, but two things need to be taken into account. 1. RSL has been terrible on the road this year. They are tied for 3rd worst PPG on the road this year (With a certain team sitting in number 1 on this list). 2. The Whitecaps have only beaten two “playoff” teams this year, LA and RBNY. They need to start getting results against better competition. | 3-2-1 | 6 | +4 |
3 |
FC Dallas |
Dallas didn’t play this week, and are coming off a week where they lost to the Fire. Still, only dropped a single spot because their body of work over the last two months has been stellar. | 5-1-0 | 2 | -1 |
4 |
New York Red Bulls |
The Red Bulls definitively put the New York rivalry to bed this year. The reliance on younger cheaper players to create a deep squad is bearing fruit. #RedBullOut fans can start sending apology cards to Ali Curtis any day now. Look the Whitecaps, the Red Bulls have only beaten lesser competition over the last month. | 4-1-1 | 3 | -1 |
5 |
Sporting Kansas City |
KC remains my pick for the Supporter’s Shield this year. If they can stay healthy, they have every chance in the world to be number 1 in the West. Last year’s rough patch is well and truly behind them now. | 4-1-1 | 5 | 0 |
6 | DC United |
How can the team that leads the SS race be so low? Other teams have simply been more impressive recently. Their 1 shot victory in Montreal says everything about DC. They can grind out results with a top notch keeper like Bill Hamid, but their offense continues to struggle against the best in the East. | 3-2-1 | 4 | -2 |
7 |
Houston Dynamo |
Manic is the only way to describe the Dynamo. On several occasions this year they looked to have found consistency and then took a nose dive thereafter. They are another team struggling to find results on the road, and their shot in making the playoffs will rely on Seattle’s continued destruction. | 3-1-2 | 10 | +3 |
8 |
Columbus Crew SC |
The Crew at times have been very good offensively, but defensively they have been a mess. Greg B. is trying to sort them out, but he shouldn’t overreact. | 3-2-1 | 8 | 0 |
9 |
Montreal Impact |
The next 3 games will determine Montreal’s season. Two home games against the two worst teams in the East (And worst road teams in the league), Philly and Chicago, wrapped around a clash with fellow Canadian’s Toronto FC. Montreal has the benefit of facing Toronto during a rough time and can get a big 6 point swing in the standings with a game in hand. | 3-2-1 | 7 | -2 |
10 |
New England Revolution |
Summer hibernation is officially over for the Revs. 7 points in their last 3 games has them vaulting up the charts. Jones returns soon, and the backline appears to have stabilized. We shall see if they can put a run together like last season. | 3-2-1 | 16 | +6 |
11 |
Colorado Rapids |
The Rapids followed up 3 straight wins with 2 straight losses. They played well against Columbus, but need more. They are the worst home team in the league, and no one makes the playoffs if they don’t win at home. | 3-3-0 | 9 | -2 |
12 |
Toronto FC |
Giovinco is unquestionably the league MVP. Toronto’s lofty league standings are well and truly are owed to the “Ant-Man”, but they have won just 3 games since the end of June. In that time they are averaging 2.2 goals per game against. That should be enough to dampen expectations moving forward. | 2-2-2 | 18 | +6 |
13 |
Portland Timbers |
Portland continues to fall, even if they won this week. What happened to them? They looked like world beaters just a month ago. | 2-2-2 | 11 | -2 |
14 |
New York City FC |
City is paying the price of ignoring history. Their neighbors across the Hudson learned the hard way that stocking your team with older expensive players can unbalance a team. A note to CFG, a team is more than it’s ticket sales and marketability. Pay gap alert! Mike Grella (60k) nutmegged multi-million dollar DP Frank Lampard on the way to assisting the second goal in City’s 2-0 loss to the Red team. Ouch. | 2-3-1 | 15 | +1 |
15 |
Chicago Fire |
Time for the Fire to start thinking about the draft. Maybe Gilberto can become an impact player for the Fire, but there is a lot of mess to sort out all over the field in the Windy City. | 2-3-1 | 13 | -2 |
16 |
Real Salt Lake |
How many Red Cards have RSL had this year? The team lives and dies on the play of Javier Morales, and that doesn’t bode well for the future. They do have a shot at silverware this year thanks to the Open Cup. | 2-3-1 | 12 | -4 |
17 |
Philadelphia Union |
The results map shows a lot of red for Philly. Their season may wind up being a fight for position among the bottom three in the East. | 1-3-2 | 17 | 0 |
18 |
Orlando City SC |
Orlando’s good run of form behind them now. Playoffs look like a long shot, but stranger things have happened. They have pieces to build around, but their defending needs work. Only Toronto Philly and NYCFC have given up more goals per 90 this year. | 1-4-1 | 14 | -4 |
19 |
Seattle Sounders FC |
Seattle is rising on our list, but the fall is meteoric. If they don’t start picking up some points soon, they are not making the playoffs, especially if Houston continues to win. | 1-5-0 | 20 | +1 |
20 |
San Jose Earthquakes |
San Jose has some games in hand on most teams in the West, but they have been nearly as bad as the Sounders over the last month. Their winless streak is now at 6. Growing pains for Dom Kinnear surely, but if history tells us anything, this team could be a dark horse playoff team that goes to MLS Cup with a strong run of form in the fall. | 0-5-1 | 19 | -1 |
