Russell Wilson Contract Extension Signed

Reports have emerged that the Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson have reached a deal on a contract extension. The Russell Wilson contract extension is reported to be $87.6 million over four years with $60 million guaranteed and a $31 million signing bonus.

RUSSELL WILSON SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

Negotiations had continued over the summer between team and player to secure Wilson’s long term future in Seattle. The former third round pick in the 2012 draft was entering his final year under his rookie contract that would have seen him earn a meager $1.54 million for 2015. As he was a mid round pick the fifth year contract option enjoyed by teams for first round picks was not applicable.

Getting this deal done before Wilson hit free agency was important to both team and player. Wilson has had two Super Bowl appearances in his three year career, winning the 2013 game and coming 1 agonizing yard shy of his second ring in 2014, when a wayward pass was intercepted by Patriots corner Malcolm Butler.

Since winning the starting quarterback job over Matt Flynn in 2012, Wilson has thrown for 9,950 yards and 72 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 1,877 yards and 11 touchdowns. Named Pepsi Rookie of the year in 2012, he has been elected to the Pro Bowl twice in 2012 and 2013.

With Wilson’s long term future secured, all eyes will be on how well Seattle can manage their defensive contracts in the coming years. With several players due to hit free agency in 2016 including, linebacker Bruce Irving and defensive tackles Brandon Meban and Tony McDaniel.
