Federer pulls out of Montreal

Roger Federer has pulled out of Coupe Rogers in Montreal.  The World #2 will not take part in the tournament this year in Montreal.  A spokesperson for the Swiss star confirmed the news saying that the #2 has cut down his schedule as he is aiming to be fully ready for the US Open in Flushing Meadows.

This news means that WR#3 Andy Murray will move up to #2 seed at the tournament, meaning the Brit will be in the opposite side of the draw to Novak Djokovic and would not meet the WR#1 until the final.  Murray has performed well at the Coupe Rogers in previous years, so this could well be a stroke of luck for the Brit.

Although pulling out from the even in Montreal, Federer has committed to playing the Davis Cup play off match for Switzerland in September as they try to remain in the world group, Stan Wawrinka will also join him for the tie.  The World #2 looks to be gearing his schedule with enough rest time between individual events.  Speculation on social media has been circulating that the Swiss is not injured, but just finding it harder to recover between events as he gets older.  With the Olympics coming up again in 2016 over in Rio, and with the singles Gold medal still missing from his trophy cabinet, the #2 seems likely to start amending his schedule as he targets the slams and the Olympics before his career finally draws to a close.

Tournament directors around the tour will be hoping that the Swiss star does not withdraw from their event, being such a big crowd attraction most will do what they can to convince him to take part in their events, Federer can choose which tournaments he plays, and is within the ATP rules to drop one of the mandatory masters because of taking part in the minimum number of events needed to qualify for this exemption.
