Baseball Prospects Report Trade Deadline Edition
Here are some Minor League prospects to keep an eye on as we move closer to the trade deadline. These are prospects who could possibly be moved between now and the trade deadline.
#1 Brandon Finnegan, SP, Kansas City Royals
Finnegan pitched in both the College World Series and the World Series last year. The Royals originally had Finnegan coming out the bullpen but he is now slotted to be a starting pitcher. We could see him moved if all the rumors are true about the Royals looking to add an ace to their staff. With names like Johnny Cueto and Cole Hamels on the block, I would not be shocked if Finnegan’s name is also thrown around a bit in trade talks.
#2 Jose De Leon SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
De Leon has had a breakthrough season with the Dodgers Double-A team this year posting 132 K in 91 IP. If the Dodgers are really out for one of the big name aces on the market, don’t be surprised to see his name thrown in the trade talks. Since Corey Seager and Julio Urias likely to be untouchable, De Leon may be targeted.
#3 Dalton Pompey OF, Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays are also in the market for a top starter just like the Dodgers and Royals. It is likely that teams will be asking how available Dalton Pompey is. He would be the start of a very good trade package the Blue Jays could potentially offer up.
#4 Zach Wheeler SP, New York Mets
Wheeler was the first of the Mets many great pitching prospects to be called up. After falling subject to Tommy John surgery this year I could see the Mets putting him on the trading block to pick up a hitter. Even with Wheeler being injured, I don’t see the Mets giving him up for a rental, unless that rental is Justin Upton or a hitter of his caliber.
#5 Gary Sanchez, C New York Yankees
Gary Sanchez has been a top-100 prospect for the past four or five years. However, the Yankees have never really given him a chance with the big league club to date. He could be a part of some of the trade offers the Yankees make. The Yankees are in the market for pitching like everyone else and the market is flooded with pitchers at the moment. I would be shocked if he is not shipped off for someone like Jeff Samardzija or a pitcher of similar caliber.
