MLS Power Rankings 20 July 2015
RANK | TEAM | COMMENTS | Last 6 | Previous | Change |
| LA Galaxy | No surprises…okay, maybe a couple of surprises. Stevie G looked right at home underneath Robbie Keane. With Gio on his way, this team is once again bursting with star power. But will it all come together? Oh yeah, hats off to Sebastian Lletget. I guess Bruce is probably over the whole Kljestan thing about now. | 4-1-1 | 2 | +1 |
| Sporting Kansas City | SKC’s win over Montreal wasn’t dominant, but they have still only lost 3 times this year. That’s damn impressive no matter how you slice it. | 5-1-0 | 3 | +1 |
| FC Dallas | Dallas’s cold streak is long behind them now after 4 straight wins. While they beat teams that are struggling a bit, wins are wins, and wins in a succession are always at a premium in MLS. | 4-1-1 | 12 | +9 |
| Vancouver Whitecaps FC | Vancouver might still be artificially inflated. When they are on, they are a joy to watch, but they still give up a lot defensively at times. Luckily David Ousted has been playing on his head. | 3-2-1 | 5 | +1 |
| New York Red Bulls | Red Bulls, like Dallas, have given the midseason vacation the shake and have earned some impressive results of late while playing with depth. All of this is great news for the team with the leagues lowest payroll. They sit in 3rd place, but they have 2 games in hand on Columbus and 3 on DC. | 4-2-0 | 15 | +10 |
| Toronto FC | Toronto is another team that might be artificially high on this list. The magic of Giovinco continues to wow, but there are plenty of questions TFC will need to ask themselves before they are really a playoff team or contender. | 2-2-2 | 10 | +4 |
| Portland Timbers | Portland is coming back to Earth now after two frustrating results. With new boy Lucas coming into the fold, we could see a different dimension to the Timbers attack that could help wake the team. | 3-2-1 | 1 | -6 |
| DC United | DC dropped out of the lead for the Supporters Shield, but don’t expect them to go quietly into the night. With Saborio making his way East, DC might finally have the kind of pure striker they need to push them to the next level. It all depends on if he can stay healthy and if Fabian Espindola can keep his head. | 2-3-1 | 6 | -2 |
| Columbus Crew SC |
Columbus had a good week with two wins thanks to the Chicago Fire. The good news? At least they put the ball in the back of the net and Ethan Finlay and Kei Kamara are playing at a different level together most games. | 4-1-1 | 11 | +2 |
| New York City FC | Losing to the Revs should probably drop you lower on this list, but it was on the Road, so we will be kind. NYC still waiting on the geezers. Nagging injuries in abundance until season’s end me thinks. | 3-2-1 | 8 | -2 |
| Colorado Rapids | Don’t look now, but Colorado have a three game win streak, something they haven’t done since July/August 2011. Yup, it’s been 4 years. The team may not be perfect, but they are defending well, and confidence will continue to grow with results. | 3-2-1 | 18 | +7 |
| Real Salt Lake | In the win against Houston, Javi Morales looked like his younger self again. As for the rest of the team? Better than late. Plata is starting to make himself a menace again, which will definitely help the future outlook. Time for the young guns to step up and earn their stripes though. | 2-2-2 | 16 | +4 |
| Philadelphia Union | Philly looked toothless in their loss to Toronto, even if they did manage to pull one back. Tough three game swing against DC, RBNY, and OCSC looms ahead. | 2-3-1 | 14 | +1 |
| Houston Dynamo | Houston continues to be an up and down team. The elation of the win against the Quakes is nullified by the loss to RSL. Growing pains for Owen Coyle’s men. Good news though, Giles Barnes will be back soon and Cubo is just about ready to go. | 2-3-1 | 17 | +3 |
| Montreal Impact | While Montreal had a good showing against KC, it didn’t earn them any points. Just like Philly, temporary success followed by troubled waters. | 2-3-1 | 13 | -2 |
| Orlando City SC | Orlando has been shooting themselves in the foot a bit of late. Deserved or not, red cards will not help you win games. Just ask Salt Lake. They also have some trouble playing against teams that sit back. Unlocking the defense still evades the newbs. | 2-3-1 | 9 | -7 |
| San Jose Earthquakes | Three straight losses sees the Quakes drop. Second biggest drop on the list in fact. Defending has been poor, but when you are up 2 goals on the road, you have to be able to hold it. Team balance is lacking. | 2-3-1 | 7 | -10 |
| Chicago Fire | Chicago just loves the color red. In this case, losses on the results table. Fans may have been a flame with excitement after new surfaced the Drogba may join the team. Drogba doused the Fire saying he would come to the MLS, but not if he had to play with Chicago. Season after season missing the playoffs will do that. | 1-4-1 | 19 | +1 |
| New England Revolution | New England might be poised to wake from the summer hibernation, but I’m not convinced all is well just yet. You don’t lose 5 out of the last 6 if you are a contender. | 1-5-0 | 20 | +1 |
| Seattle Sounders FC | Oh Seattle. Not only have you fallen from number 1 to number 20 in just a few weeks, but you have done so looking toothless. They have scored 2 in their last 630 minutes of soccer. Yikes. US Gold Cup run might be dooming the Sounders if not for their terrific start. | 1-5-0 | 4 | -16 |
