The defending champion is ousted in a shocker, the most promising young American rolls o,n and the bottom half is wide open as Week 1 concludes and Week 2 is on the horizon.
Who looked good:
Timea Bacsinszky (def. Lisicki 6-3 6-2)
The 15th seed continues her impressive run on the grass, steamrolling past the former Wimbledon finalist and sending the German to her earliest Wimbledon exit since 2007. The Swiss #1 got 73% of her first serves in while winning the exact same percentahe of those first serve points. In taking 4 of her 9 break point chances, the French Open semifinalist is proving her run in Paris was no fluke and with a wide-open bottom half of the draw, could potentially go one step further than she did at Roland Garros.
Caroline Wozniacki (def. Giorgi 6-2 6-2)
The Dane needed a performance like this as Week 2 approaches and in dismantling a player that had given her trouble in the past, served notice that she is indeed the favorite in the bottom half of the draw.
Who looked bad:
Camila Giorgi (l. to Wozniacki 6-2 6-2)
The Italian, already a titlist this year on grass, came into her match with Wozniacki sporting a 2-1 head-to-head lifetime record, but committed 30 unforced errors and won just 25% of her 2nd serve points (6/24) in capitulating to the 5th seed in just 71 minutes. A talented player, Giorgi will need to learn to strike the right balance of aggression and control if she is to avoid these types of performances in the big moments such as today.
Match of the Day:
28th seed Jelena Jankovic def. 2nd seed Petra Kvitova 3-6 7-5 6-4
The defending champion seemed to have things going all her own way, leading by a set and 4-3 until Jankovic broke back and eventually outlasted the Czech 7-5 to force a 3rd set. Once in the decider, the Serb held her serve well (never her strong suit) and waited for her opportunity to capitalize. At 5-4 she did as Kvitova dumped a final backhand into the net, sending the 28th seed into the Round of 16. Jankovic celebrated by falling flat on her back. Considered past her prime, the former World #1 and US Open finalist turned back the clock for a vintage performance at just the right time to advance to the 2nd week in a now-wide open bottom half of the draw that she created with this magnificent victory.
