Reports are emerging that star New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has severely injured his hand in a forth of July fireworks accident.

REPORT: JASON PIERRE-PAUL INJURES HAND IN FIREWORKS ACCIDENT

Andy Slater was the first to report that Pierre-Paul had got overzealous in his Independence Day celebrations and forgone firework safety procedures. While it is unclear how severe the injuries he sustained are, indications are that his hand may have bore the brunt of the damage, including the possibility of severed fingers. If confirmed this could mean huge implications for the defensive ends future with the New York Giants and his career in the NFL.

Pierre-Paul is still to sign his franchise tender with the Giants which would see him paid $14.8 million next season.

Mike Perchick, a sports reporter and producer with channel 16 WAPT had this update on Pierre-Paul’s condition.

Pierre-Paul is reportedly still being evaluated in Hospital and if the rumors are true Last Word on Sports wishes the player a speedy recovery.

NFL insider, Ian Rapoport has since confirmed that Pierre-Paul has indeed been treated in hospital but the extent of the injuries remain unclear.

In a further development to this continually evolving story, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the injuries Pierre-Paul sustained will not impact his career long-term.

EDIT 11:00 PM ET

Specific details on the nature of Pierre-Paul’s injury are slowly beginning to emerge. Reports are indicating that he has suffered burns to a few of his fingers and may also have nerve damage of some sort. Nevertheless, there is a growing consensus that the star defensive end has escaped this incident without incurring anything severe.

What will be interesting to observe down the road is how this incident will affect negotiations between the soon-to-be sixth year pro and the Giants over a new contract. Pierre-Paul was given the franchise tag early on in free agency which for his position equates to a one-year $14.813 million fully guaranteed contract if a new deal can’t be worked out. Does this tilt the leverage factor in the Giants favor?
