The New York Rangers have pulled the trigger on a deal, trading away back-up goaltender Cam Talbot to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a package of draft picks including a 2nd and 3rd rounder today at the NHL Draft.

Many teams were in the running for Talbot, as the time was drawing near to the NHL Draft. As per Darren Dreger of TSN, teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers were all interested in finding out what it would take to land the Rangers back-up.
Set to make $1.45 million next season, Talbot will then become a restricted free agent, however it’s also important to note that the Oilers can not re-sign Talbot to an extension until January 1st, should his body of work impress them enough to do so.
Talbot, 27, played 36 games last season after starter Henrik Lundqvist went down to injury. While experts made claims that the Rangers would crumble without their King in goal, Talbot stepped up in a big way. Posting a 21-9-4 record, Talbot’s 2.21 goals against and .926 save percentage were impressive. He stood tall in goal, looked comfortable as if he had been there before and made a few miraculous saves that you’ll see on highlight reel compilations.
Career-wise, Talbot has appeared in 57 games over two seasons and has posted a record of 33-15-5, with an average save percentage of .930.
Talbot is expected to take over the number one job for a team that had real goaltending issues the last several years. With Connor McDavid now in Edmonton, the Oilers are hoping for big things next year, and Talbot must solidify the backend if they are to have any chance at a playoff spot.
