It has been known for YMCA Capital City League fans to leave early before the last game comes to an end to beat the traffic leaving the games; however, Matt Thomas’ performance in Sunday’s final game kept fans in their seats. Read more about Thomas’ performance in the third game report below.
Phoenix Renewable Resources (3-0) 122, Renaissance Granite & Quartz (0-3) 94
During game one, Reed Timmer attempted to lead a Renaissance squad that is missing two Iowa Staters to no avail. The Drake to-be sophomore secured 30 points and had 26 points of help from Bill Freeman.
On the other side, Monte Morris casually had a triple double with 32 points, ten rebounds, and 12 assists. Morris was doing all of this while talking crap to teammate Jameel McKay during the game, which the fans enjoyed.
ADIO Chiropractic (2-1) 140, Walnut Creek YMCA (1-2) 109
YCCL’s CEO Derek Hannah’s ADIO team had another strong offensive game on Sunday, tallying 140 points. Shockingly, Georges Niang only had 12.
Another Cyclone, Jordan Ashton, instead went off as the newbie shot his way to 33 points.
“Everyone sees me as just a shooter, I feel like I play good defense,” Ashton said. “I also feel that I’m more athletic than people realize.”
During the second game of the day, it was evident that the YMCA Capital City League was the talk of the town, reaching another crowd closing in on capacity.
“It’s been cool the last couple years to have increased attendance,” Hannah said. “Obviously, the success of the Iowa State program and the talent they have been bringing in, not to mention the up and coming Drake program under their new head coach. With the help of twitter being invented our league has really taken off the last few years too, it’s a lot of fun for the community.”
Hannah also stressed how it contributes to the community and to the players.
“The attendance isn’t our goal – the bigger the crowd is the more fun everyone has,” Hannah said. “My goal is to give an opportunity to the people to see their favorite players up close and personal.”
Capital Orthopedics (2-1) 120, Hannah Homes (1-2) 117
During the night’s finale, an anticipated matchup became a showcase for Cyclone, Matt Thomas. Nicknamed the iceman, Thomas dropped a cool 39 points and nine rebounds. That includes a game winning three from four or five feet out of the arc, with three seconds left on the clock.
“It feels good, I didn’t shoot the ball well last time I played here,” Thomas said. “It feels good to get into a rhythm.”

5:30pm CT: Hannah Homes (1-2) vs. Renaissance Granite & Quartz (0-3)
Renaissance Granite squares up once again in the first game of the night, and maybe this time Reed Timmer might get some help. A source told LWOS that Abdel Nader was out of town through the weekend and has not said he won’t play on Wednesday.
6:45pm CT: Phoenix Renewable Resources (3-0) vs. Walnut Creek YMCA (1-2)
In the night’s second game, Phoenix RR goes up against YMCA trying to remain the only unbeaten team in the league. Monte Morris has lead this team game after game, and it does not seem like that will change.
8:00pm CT: ADIO Chiropractic (2-1) vs. Capital Orthopedics (2-1)
Both ADIO and Capital Ortho are coming off big wins and this matchup will be the best of the night. ADIO brings a powerful team offense against a shooter coming off a hot game in Matt Thomas.
