2015 NBA Draft Profile: Tyus Jones
Tyus Jones – 6’1” PG, Duke University, Point Guard, 6’1″, 185 LBS., 19 years old
Offensive Game – Jones is a smart player who rarely makes the wrong offensive move. He is a great passer and can score when needed. A true point guard who has a high basketball IQ. He also seemed to play best when the games were on the line such as in Duke’s NCAA championship run. Jones works well in feeding post players. Jones get to the free throw line often and shoots a solid 88.2%.
Defensive Game – It is on the defensive side of the ball where Jones’s game needs work. He does not defend well off the ball. He plays small and often relies on help defense. Jones’s lack of pure athleticism may not bode well with talented NBA athletes.
NBA Potential – Jones will likely never be a star in the NBA. He may have a decent career as a solid back up point guard. He is smart and plays better than his size would indicate. However, Jones played on a dominant team at the college level and may struggle at the NBA level.
NBA Player Comparison – Trey Burke
NBA Readiness – Jones has great maturity and understanding of the game. It would not be surprising for Jones to play meaningful minutes early in his career. He seems NBA ready from basketball IQ standpoint. Jones’s biggest roadblock will be his lack of size and strength next to other NBA point guards.
