The 2015/2016 Challenge Cup draw took place yesterday in Switzerland, and there are a number of reasons to look forward to the tournament from a Worcester Warriors perspective. The newly promoted side will look to mark their return to the Premiership with a strong showing in Europe, it is also a chance to pop in and say hi to some old foes along the way.
Worcester were drawn in pool 4 alongside La Rochelle, Zebre and Gloucester Rugby. From a fans perspective the Gloucester match will be an eye watering encounter and they have the chance to experience it at least four times over next season (coupled with the league).
So who are the opponents?
Zebre
They joined the Pro 12 in 2012, finishing bottom since their inception. They play in Northern Italy at the Stadio XXV Aprile. Regardless of their history of results, the only way is up for Zebre and they will provide a stern test.
La Rochelle
Residing in the South of France, they play at the Stade Marcel Deflandre. They finished mid table last season in the Top 14, not a bad showing from a recently promoted side the season previous. Fairly evenly matched teams, Worcester are by no means sure of a victory in this one.
Gloucester Rugby
This side needs no introduction to Warriors fans, partly due to the fact they are the reigning champions of the tournament. They play at neighbouring Kingsholm Stadium. Worcester will look to claim a victory in this one for sure and they actually won last time the two sides met on the last day of the 2013/14 season.
The first round of fixtures is scheduled for the weekend commencing November the 12th. Warriors are able to play in this tournament due to their return to the Aviva Premiership, with victory in the Championship final in May.
With many new faces coming to the club, the fans will look forward to them being unleashed in Europe. None more so than the new deadly wing pairing of Super Cooper Vuna (acquired the season just gone) and Bryce Heem. #HeemWatch will be heightened until the man himself arrives for next season.
