The month of May proved to be one of Joey Gase’s best months in his NASCAR career. The driver of the 52 car highlighted it with a Xfinity Series top five at Talladega, attracted sponsors to race at Talladega, and did it all with just six full time employees. The Joey Gase success is quite something.
“The biggest thing that help my career in the month of May was our 5th place finish in Talladega,” Gase said. “[We were] able to that with our small team and small budget was quite amazing.”
The top five was Gase’s first of his career and the first in Jimmy Means Racing history.
“We have one of the smallest budgets for a full time team in Xfinity and to be all those big guys was huge,” Gase said. “All the media attention we gained after was also very help full to our team and trying to gain sponsors
Like most NASCAR drivers, Gase does not show any signs of giving up, or stopping.
“[We are] trying to have strong consistent finishes in the top 25,” Gase said. “And [are] searching for sponsorship support.”
Gase said we he has been talking with multiple Sprint Cup Series teams to continue this remarkable year. It makes it even more impressive when finding out just how underfunded the team is.
“We only have really six full time guys with four of them going to the track every week,” Gase said. “Everyone on the team wears many hats and no one on the team has just one job.”
“There is always something that needs done in our shop,” Gase said. “The hardest thing for us is to keep up with maintenance with having so few people and being able to try new thing to improve the cars.”
However, Joey Gase, is not just any run of the mill underdog driver. He runs every race, week after week, promoting Donate Life; a company that encourages organ donors.
“We do many things to promote Donate Life and to honor donors and there families,” Gase said. “The biggest thing is putting pictures of donors on the car which lets the nation know that once you are a donor you will never be forgotten and puts a face to the cause.”
Gase will try to continue his success this season, in memory of his Mom, Mary, who died of a brain aneurism in 2011.
