Don’t look now, but whoever is running the Toronto Maple Leafs Official Twitter account is starting to have some fun and they are providing some thoroughly entertaining material.
Social media gives people anonymity and with that power, it’s only normal that some choose to have fun and take part in a little game the majority knows as Trolling. Basically, they simply create an account with no ties back to their true identity, and they spend hours on end trying to rile up whoever they focus their attack on. Some choose famous celebrities, others choose the common kicking can. In this case, it’s the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It’s no secret that the Leafs have become quite the butt of all hockey jokes in the last decade, making the playoffs just once during that time and losing in the first round in spectacular fashion to the Boston Bruins. Leafs fans have had to endure their own team’s shortcomings and also the ridicule they face from other, more successful fan bases. That same ridicule is directed towards players’ Twitter accounts and of course, that includes the team’s official one too. Normally, it happens when a team faces a loss and the opposing team’s fans go on the assault. For the Leafs, their off-season is nothing but that, and last night it was time to have a little fun with it.
After some draft profiles were tweeted out, @AngryHockey56 pointed out that some of the jersey pictures had Toronto Maple Leafs colours while others had their original junior team colours. After pondering if this was simply foreshadowing, the Maple Leafs Official Twitter responded simply with a picture.

Next in line was @megannicholas6 , who tweeted out to the team’s account, “you havent won or made the stanley cup playoffs in 48 years .my dead grandpa can score more than you,” to which they responded swiftly and promptly with…

Off to an early 1-0 lead, the Maple Leafs Official Twitter was looking strong off the bat. After taking a right hook to the jaw, they thundered back with a left uppercut to the jaw, but they weren’t done just yet. Internet trolls don’t just vanish into thin air after one round of exchanges and when Miss Megan brought up her father into the mix, who can skate but be better than them – assume she meant he can’t skate – the Leafs dealt another massive blow.

Check and mate.
Their night wasn’t over however, as they had some fun with fellow NHL official accounts of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets. What was more an embrace of Twitter accounts that have had their fair share of toss-downs with fans, they gathered together in an online embrace, more-or-less taking a moment to chuckle about the Leafs body of work. Then, @Tanya_Chen decided to toss her own two cents into the mix, accusing the Leafs account of becoming “salty”, a popular term used for when a person/party becomes negative.
The response? Hilarious.

Sometimes, all it takes is a picture to have some fun and the person running the account certainly found the right one. Their night finished off with a few emoji responses. First to respond to the confusion of the salty pic, where @karengeier tweeted “Wut”, they responded simply with “¯\_(ツ)_/¯”. Finally, to end their night, Amanda Kelly (@AKellyGlobal ), Global News Producer tweeted her own version of the story, to which she received a personal response from Toronto’s account: “ʘ‿ʘ” This isn’t the first time the Leafs Twitter account got a bit snippy and decided to have some fun. Just a little over a week ago, they received a tweet that called them out for a lack of Canadian-born players, pointing out that the more successful teams in the NHL who are competing for the Stanley Cup have an abundance of Canadians on their team. In response, they decided to give them a two-sentence lashing and a picture meant only to ridicule and embarrass the individual. The Twitter account belonging to that individual has since been removed.

A night of laughs from an individual with a sense of humor, hockey fans thank you for taking the time to weed through the internet trolls of today and teach them a lesson. Perhaps next time, they’ll think twice about picking a fight with the Toronto Maple Leafs Official Twitter account! Then again, maybe not. Hopefully not. We could all use another laugh from time to time.
