Andrés Romero Carving Out a Niche with the Montreal Impact

With their recent surge in form, the Montreal Impact are slowly clawing their way back into an MLS playoff spot. The likes of Nacho Piatti, Laurent Ciman and Jack McInerney have been making all the headlines in Montreal over the last month. However, there is another piece of the puzzle that has quietly been making his presence felt in La belle province.

Andrés Romero Making and Impact in Montreal:

With their recent surge in form, the Montreal Impact are slowly clawing their way back into an MLS playoff spot. The likes of Nacho Piatti, Laurent Ciman and Jack McInerney have been making all the headlines in Montreal over the last month. However, there is another piece of the puzzle that has quietly been making his presence felt in La belle province. Andrés Romero has quietly become one of the leaders this season on the Bleu-Blanc-Noir. After a sensational second-half performance last Saturday night in Columbus (including the game winning goal) the Argentine attacking midfielder now has three goals in MLS this season. Romero also scored two important goals for the Impact in the CONCACAF Champions League run this past spring, which saw them fall in the final against Club America.

Romero was born in Bell Ville, Argentina and played his youth soccer for Argentinos Juniors before playing on the senior side between 2008-2011. The speedy winger had been on loan to the Impact for the last two seasons from Brazilian side Tombense FC. After his first season in Montreal there were questions as to whether Romero would be brought back after his up-and-down form in 2013, in which he only scored only two goals in thirty appearances.

2014 Montreal Impact MVP and New Contract:

In 2014 the Argentine was brought back from Tombense and was one of the few bright spots in a very difficult season for the Impact. However, to the delight of many, Romero ended up winning the team MVP in 2014 and resigning him became a priority for Frank Klopas and the Montreal front office. It did not take long for a deal to materialize and in January Romero was signed to a permanent multi-year deal with the club.

Maybe it is the stability of having a permanent deal, comfort level with the club, or having fellow Argentine’s on the roster;  but whatever it is Romero has certainly only been getting better over his time in Montreal. His trademark ability to take opponents on one-on-one and his nose for goal have made him a dangerous attacking option or the Impact to deploy. With so many injuries hitting Montreal forwards this season it has heaped pressure on Romero to perform, he has certainly passed the test.

Part of the Plan:

With head coach Frank Klopas utilizing a one striker strategy, Montreal relies heavily on the counter-attack and Andrés Romero is one player that has benefited. The Argentine has been named to the MLS team of the week twice in the last month (Week 11 & 14) and only looks to be getting better. With the partnership between Piatti and Romero only getting stronger the sky is the limit for Andrés Romero in Montreal.

If the Impact continue their upward trend in the MLS in 2015, there is no question Andrés Romero will play a big part in this success.
