Iowa State held an official press conference Tuesday Morning in which they introduced former Murray State Coach, Steve Prohm, as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
Athletic Director Jamie Pollard and University President Steven Leath kicked off the press conference with kind words.
“We all know Fred left some big shoes to fill,” Leath said. “Jamie ran an excellent search.”
Leath kept his input to a minimum and overturned the mic to Jamie Pollard.
Pollard told media that he looked for three things; a good fit, great on court demeanor, and a winner. He said Prohm fit each of this categories.
“I reached out to Big 12 Officials (chuckles) to help me research,” Pollard said. “They told me he had that on court demeanor.”
Pollard continued to describe the new coach to Cyclone fans.
“The Big 12 is a player’s league,” Pollard said. “Coach Prohm is a player’s coach.”
Before ending his portion of the conference, Pollard talked about the local restaurants that make Ames a great place to raise a family, referencing Hickory Park and Hy-Vee.
Prohm started off his end of the presser by thanking his family, ISU, Murray State, and everyone else that made this happen.
“They say there is no better place to play than Hilton,” Prohm said.
Later in the conference, Prohm was talking about the local grocery stores and restaurants that Pollard referenced, and accidentally called Hy-Vee, High Five.
“I’m not here to replace Hoiberg,” Prohm said. “I will use him as a resource.”
Prohm was asked by Des Moines Register reporter Randy Peterson how he was going to plan to stop Kansas’ Big 12 Regular Season Championship streak.
Pollard remarked, “Man, getting right down to it, Randy.”
“We cannot control what Kansas does at Baylor,” Prohm responded. “We can only control what we do at Hilton.”
Prohm also said he would take this week to get to know players, starting by watching Game Three of the NBA Finals tonight.
