Hamilton Ready to Bounce Back as Canadian Grand Prix Approaches

Lewis Hamilton will be looking to put the events of Monaco behind him as the Canadian Grand Prix approaches.

Monaco was a disaster for current world champion Lewis Hamilton. The shock and fallout of Mercedes pit-stop blunder had Hamilton in disbelief. It came in the wake of signing a new contract with Mercedes and Hamilton must surely have felt this was unjust repayment of his loyalty.

But that was then and to use the old cliché this is now. Hamilton has stated he has moved on and that he still trusts Mercedes which is vital if the Monaco fiasco is to be erased from their memories. The question is how easily is it forgotten. Hamilton will hope the answer is very easily. It is obvious that he is determined to move on and that is essential.

Canada would appear to be the perfect antidote to Monaco. Unlike Monaco the Montreal circuit is covered in overtaking zones with two long straights that are back to back. Overtaking is plentiful and any pit-stop nightmares may well prove lest costly should there be any. However it’s not just his own team that Hamilton will have to be watchful of.

Ferrari have been known to be bringing a significant upgrade to their power unit at Canada. Straight-line speed is somewhat of an issue for the Scuderia which might prove catastrophic in Canada. If their power unit upgrade proves successful then Mercedes and Hamilton may find they have a serious problem. In Malaysia when Ferrari caused all sorts of panic among the Mercedes ranks when they took out their only race win of the season so far, tensions flared between Hamilton and hi engineer. With tension already high between Hamilton and Mercedes a Ferrari headache is the last thing the already wobbly relationship needs.

When things are put in perspective however, Hamilton is still leading the world championship. The world champion is also a fierce competitor and many believe the Monaco incident will only drive Hamilton on more. Canada is also a track that Hamilton has found huge success on winning in Montreal no less than three times in 2007, 2010 and 2012. It would seem crazy not to back Hamilton this weekend given his record in Canada but some have cast their doubts.

Nico Rosberg may not have been the focal point of Monaco but he still won and as another old cliché goes a win is indeed a win no matter what way it is taken or viewed. Rosberg is on a hot-streak having also won in Spain prior to Monaco and his confidence will only grow with every win or even higher finish than his teammate. It is ludicrous that all the talk among the paddock has been focused solely on Hamilton yet it is Rosberg who is the form driver rather than Hamilton. Rosberg will be rife with confidence and although the streets of Montreal are not always a happy hunting ground for the German he will be determined to pile the misery on Hamilton.

Qualifying should give a good indication on Hamilton’s state of mind. If Monaco is out of mind then pole position will be in his pocket but if not then we could see a distracted Hamilton wavering in the corners and lacking overall concentration. It should prove to be a pivotal Grand Prix as should Rosberg win the Canadian Grand Prix he will snatch the Championship lead from Hamilton.
