Early Monday Ian Rapoport cited a source, saying that a deal was close, this followed on from months of contract negotiation between the player and the team. Newton, 26 is known for his ability to beat teams with both his throwing and his ability to run the ball has amassed almost 14,500 yards passing and over 2,500 rushing yards in his 4 years in the league.
Newton missed two games in 2014 following an accident which saw him suffer a fractured back when his truck flipped over several times after leaving the Panthers training facility in December of 2014.
Newton was entering the fifth year of his rookie contract that would see him make $14.67 million. His deal follows on from the Miami Dolphins securing Ryan Tannehill’s services with a 6 year $95 million contract last month. While Carolina have secured Newton’s future with the team they will hope for an improvement in play; 2014 saw one of Newton’s worst performances only winning 5 games and the team limp into the playoffs with a 7-8 and 1 record.
With Newton’s deal in the books all eyes turn toward Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck, who are both in line for large contracts with their respective teams.
