In an odd twist to the already complicated Georgia quarterback situation, reports have surfaced that Greyson Lambert – a current University of Virginia quarterback – will be visiting Athens this weekend to discuss a possible transfer. Lambert is also planning to visit University of Florida, Colorado State and Purdue, among others, in the coming weeks, but the fact that Georgia has any interest at all in Lambert is interesting.
Lambert is set to graduate UVA on June 23 with two years of eligibility remaining. He would also be eligible to play immediately at whatever school he chooses. So what does that mean for the current quarterback battle waging in Athens, especially after Georgia was thought to have interest in Everett Golson a couple weeks ago? It could mean a few things:
1) The quarterbacks on the roster are underperforming
After G-Day, the quarterback race seemed like it was going to come down to Brice Ramsey and Faton Bauta, with Jacob Park falling off a bit. Both Ramsey and Bauta showed flashes of excellence and the potential to lead the offense effectively with a bit more work and consistent practice. Just a month and a half later, it’s feasible to think new Georgia offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is not pleased with the progress he has seen with the current slate of quarterbacks. Perhaps bringing another guy into the competition will push the true starter to excel to the top of the pack.
2) There’s a transfer on the horizon
It’s very possible that one of Georgia’s current quarterbacks is considering a transfer himself. My money would be on Bauta, with Jacob Park behind him and five-star recruit Jacob Eason coming in next season. If that’s the case, Georgia could be looking for some more depth at the quarterback position, in case of an injury to the starter. Greyson Lambert’s statistics don’t inspire a huge amount of confidence that he’s the answer for Georgia – he completed 154 of 261 (59%) passes for 1,632 yards and 10 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 2014 – but this news could be a premonition of a potential transfer out of Athens.
3) Injuries
Though unlikely, there is a chance one of Georgia’s quarterbacks is dealing with an injury that is not currently public knowledge. It would be extremely odd for Georgia to carry four scholarship quarterbacks on their roster, but an injury to one of their own would be a reason to seek depth from outside programs.
There’s a lot of mystery about Greyson Lambert swirling around, but one thing is for sure – he has the potential to make an impact at the school he chooses. Lambert was widely seen as the answer to Virginia’s quarterback search before splitting time with current UVA quarterback Matt Johns. Lambert has a powerful arm, but is prone to making bad mistakes with the football – not an attractive trait for a quarterback.
If Lambert doesn’t end up at Georgia, this conversation could all be moot, but the potential of a quarterback transfer to Athens is beyond intriguing.
