MLS Pick ‘Em 2015: Week 12 – Philadelphia Union v. D.C. United

You get a point, and you get a point. POINTS FOR EVERYONE! Okay, so maybe Oprah wasn’t handing out points last week to the experts, but she may as well have. The Red Bulls never looked uncomfortable against New York City FC, even if they played the majority of the game a man down. We did get a nice little shakeup at the top with Jeff pulling within a point of Russ for #1. The pack is starting to spread a little bit, which will make the next few weeks more interesting. Here’s how our standings look now:

Player Points Correct Outcome Correct Score Incorrect
Russ McKenzie 11 7 2 5
Jeff Krause 9 7 1 5
Eric Walcott 7 7 0 5
Alec Rivera 6 4 1 8
Ned Joyce 5 3 1 9
Michael Norton 3 3 0 9
John Richan 3 3 0 9
Joseph Goldstein 2 2 0 10

This week, the ailing Philadelphia Union welcome the surging D.C. United. D.C. hasn’t lost since a visit to Red Bull Arena early in the season and has snagged the top spot in the East thanks to a midweek come from behind victory to the expansion side from Orlando. Philadelphia has one just once in their last six and has been leaking goals thanks to the seemingly endless carousel of goalkeepers that have come through the Union’s starting XI this year. Philly might have the homefield advantage, and DC is coming off a midweek game, but it is hard to think we will see an upset in this one. Let’s see what the experts say:

D.C. (2-0) The Union have struggled mightily the last few weeks and I have no reason to believe that will change this week. D.C. wins in spite of the short week.

D.C. (1-0) D.C. is by far the better team but the short rest and Espindola’s questionable health means they scrape out the win by a single goal. The Union continue to be a disaster and never threaten Hamid’s goal.

D.C. (2-0) Philadelphia are reeling, and it just seems to get worse week after week. D.C. have been improving their play with every game and, with the impending return of Birnbaum and introduction of Halsti, look to be one of the teams to beat in the East. Some encouraging moments from Philadelphia, but Jim Curtin won’t be able to Humpty Dumpty together again.

D.C. (3-0) Philly has currently replaced Chivas USA as the league’s whipping boy. Does anyone else really expect them to win in the foreseeable future?

D.C. (2-0) I don’t see this working out well for the Union. Their goalkeeping situation is akin to an Abbott and Costello sketch, and they do not have the right players in a position to succeed. D.C.’s new style and fire down below make this an easy 3 points.

D.C. (3-0) D.C. United is just getting warmed up. The Union are in shambles – this should be no challenge for one of the top teams in the East.

PHI (2-1) Are Philadelphia bad? Absofreakinlutely! If Rais M’Bohli walks onto the pitch, will his own club’s fans pelt him with beer cups? Potentially. Does this have I-95 upset special written all over it? Not at all. But stranger things have happened.

DC (2-1) D.C. wins. Ugly game whose score line makes it appear closer than it is but if D.C. wins and no one watches the game, did it ever really happen?
