UFC Fight Night Fact Sheet: Miocic vs Hunt

UFC Fight Night: Miocic vs Hunt proved to be an exciting event. We saw upsets, we saw flash finishes, we saw shocking comebacks. It was all happening in Adelaide.

In an attempt to round up an excellent night of fights, Last Word on Sports has your UFC Fight Night fact sheet right here. Here are a handful of the most surprising, and in some cases even misleading facts coming out of Australia.

When Brendan O’Reilly and Vik Grujic battled through an entertaining three rounds to a decision, they broke a streak of 12 straight finishes for the UFC in Australia. The run had started with Marcus Brimage’s first round head kick knockout of Jumabieke Tuerxun at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs Bisping in November of last year, and ended with Ben Nguyen’s first round finish of Alptekin Ozkilic in the show’s opener.

Following their wins in Adelaide, there are now just two fighters in the women’s strawweight division who have more UFC wins than Alex Chambers and Bec Rawlings. Paige VanZant (2) and current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (3) stand ahead of the rest of the pack. A win currently goes a long way at 115lbs.

It was not such good news for Kailin Curran. Not only did she lose on the Fight Pass prelims, but, in doing so she became the first woman in the strawweight division to have two UFC losses on her record. Curran would not be out there alone for long however, as Lisa Ellis soon joined her. Ellis’ loss to Bec Rawlings was also her second loss in the UFC.

Hatsu Hioki became the third Japanese fighter to lose on Australian soil in the UFC. Riki Fukuda and Yasuhiro Urushitani had both been defeated previously, as Hioki crumbled when met with a Dan Hooker head kick. Takeya Mizugaki remains the only Japanese fighter to have won in Australia, beating Nam Phan back in 2013.

There were a hat-trick of firsts for Jonavin “Spyder” Webb in Adelaide. His fight with Kyle Noke was his first in the UFC. It was also the first time he had fought outside of the United States. In addition, a debatable split decision from the judges saw Webb handed the first defeat of his 10 fight professional career.

After a main event that saw him dominate Mark Hunt before forcing a stoppage in the fifth and final round, Stipe Miocic has now fought in five different countries for the UFC. The United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and now Australia. Mirko Cro Cop is the only current ranked UFC heavyweight to have fought in more different countries for the company, having competed in six.
