Homer Bailey to Have Tommy John Surgery

It was announced earlier today that Reds Pitcher, Homer Bailey, will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2015 season. Bailey is a nine-year veteran, and has two no-hitters on his resume.

Homer Bailey has been a starter since he was called up in 2007, and has since filled key middle of the pack spots in the starting rotation since 2009. Here’s what the general manager of the Cincinnati Reds, Walt Jocketty, had to say about losing his starting pitcher:

“After consulting with [team medical director] Dr. [Tim] Kremchek and other orthopedic surgeons, we determined the best option with the most predictable outcome is to surgically repair the ligament. It does not appear the injury is at all related to the right elbow flexor mass injury Homer sustained late last season.” Homer Bailey is set to have surgery a week from today (Friday) in Cincinnati.

This is already the third time the Reds have used the DL this year: Sean Marshall (labrum), Manny Parra (neck), and now Homer Bailey (Ulnar Collateral Ligament) have all been placed on the DL. The Reds rotation, excluding Homer Bailey, is: Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Anthony DeSclafani, Jason Marquis, and Michael Lorenzen.

Bailey has made two starts this year. He is 0-2 with a 5.96 ERA. In his career, Homer Bailey has pitched 1010 innings, and has an ERA of 4.19. That averages out to a little bit over 100 innings per season at 112. Though he isn’t considered an “innings eater” in the eyes of many, he has had a prominent role in the rotation, and the Reds will miss his quality starts.
