Welcome to the Lucha Underground Review for the April 22, 2015 episode on El Rey Network. Find out what happened, who had the edge, and who became the first ever Lucha Underground Trios Champions!
A LOTUS BY ANY OTHER NAME
The Black Lotus continues her training with El Dragon Azteca. It has been a slow burn with this angle, revealing only little bits every couple weeks, but this week we got to see a little bit of The Lotus in action. Granted, it was in a rather cinematic silhouette, we still got to see a little of what she can do against Azteca. I’m looking forward to another lady mixing it up in Lucha Underground.
SEXY STAR VS. PENTAGON JR.
Pentagon Jr. has been on a rampage the last couple months, breaking the arms of his opponents as a sacrifice to his mysterious “master”. One person who has taken umbrage with this is Sexy Star, as she has come to the aid of multiple would-be sacrifices, most recently ring announcer Melissa Santos. Sexy’s hatred of Pentagon’s bullying tactics, and Pentagon’s frustration with Sexy Star sticking her nose in his business, it all came to a head this week.
Edge: From a pure physical stance Pentagon could be seen as having the edge in this match, as he dished out the majority of the punishment throughout, however, one of Sexy Star’s greatest assets is her ‘never say die’ attitude, and she had that in spades for this match. Add to that, Sexy pulled out the win and it’s hard to say Pentagon had the edge considering he has to face his “master” after tasting defeat. The Edge goes to Sexy Star.
PATRON SAINT
The tensions between Johnny Mundo and Alberto El Patron continue to run high. It’s only a matter of time before these two square off in the Temple, but I find it interesting that, despite how well loved El Patron is, despite how respected he is by the believers, he still takes on more of a heel role during these backstage segments. It has me wondering if it will be sooner rather than later that we see the more ruthless Alberto that many fans are more familiar with.
LUCHA UNDERGROUND TRIOS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FINALS
KING CUERNO, CAGE, TEXANO VS. SON OF HAVOC, IVELISSE, ANGELICO VS. BIG RYCK, THE MACK, KILLSHOT
Heading into this three way elimination match the odds on favourites were King Cuerno, Cage, and Texano. Two of the three, Cage and Cuerno, have recently challenged Prince Puma for his Lucha Underground Championship, meanwhile Texano has been feuding with AAA Champion Alberto El Patron. They have main event written all over them, so imagine my surprise when they were the first team eliminated. Granted, it involved some help from Shawn Daivari.
As the match wore on it was looking like Big Ryck’s team was en route to capturing the gold. Ivelisse injured her knee and was having trouble even simply walking while Son of Havoc and Angelico were easy pickings for Ryck, The Mack, and Killshot. However, perseverance pays off and after Ivelisse and Havoc took out Ryck and Mack, Angelico managed to catch Killshot with the Fall Of The Angels and secure the victory.
Edge: The fans were strongly behind Son of Havoc’s team in this match, they may not have been the biggest dogs in this fight but through sheer iron will, they managed to win the Trios Championships……or did they? Through his usual chicanery, Dario Cueto announced that there would be one more team fighting in the tournament. In order to win the Trios titles Son of Havoc, Ivelisse and Angelico would have to get passed The Crew.
LUCHA UNDERGROUND TRIOS CHAMPIONSHIP NO DISQUALIFICATION MATCH
THE CREW VS. SON OF HAVOC, IVELISSE, ANGELICO
One of history’s most classic tales is that of the underdog, and that tale was told to perfection by these six individuals. Cisco, Bael, and Cortez Castro came out the gate heavy on offense, each man focusing on an opponent, picking them apart like a vulture forging for scraps. Every time someone from Team Havoc mounted even the slightest comeback, it was shut down by The Crew, double teaming and triple teaming their already worn out opponents. The action spilled all over the Temple, Angelico was laid out by Bael atop Dario Cueto’s office, Son Of Havoc was brawling with Mr. Cisco in the crowd, leaving Ivelisse alone in the ring. As Castro and Bael stalked Ivelisse, it was looking bleak until Angelico soared through the air like an avenging angel, rescuing Ivelisse and taking out both men. Now it was Ivelisse’s turn, bad leg and all she laid waste to all three members of The Crew with a kendo stick, leaving Bael and Castro prone to attack from Angelico and Son Of Havoc respectively.
Edge: The majority of the match was commanded by The Crew, but for sheer heart, will and determination, the edge has to go to Ivelisse, Angelico and Son Of Havoc. After getting past two impressive teams in the three way elimination match, just to be fed to The Crew, and still manage to pull out a victory was remarkable and well deserving of the edge. After the match the fans in The Temple were chanting “YOU DESERVE IT!”, truer words have never been spoken.
Until next week, keep your mask on!
