When Georges St. Pierre said he would take time away from fighting, the big question on everyone’s mind would be when, and if, he would make a return. This week at the UFC 186 media day, GSP was in attendance to help promote the event and his training partner Rory MacDonald.
As expected, the attention was not shifted to the event or the next welterweight title challenger. Instead, the spotlight was on GSP, and the conditions that would need to be met in order for him to return.
“The worst case (scenario) for me would be to make a comeback and make a fool of myself. That would be a terrible, terrible outcome. That’s the worst thing and I don’t want that to happen,” St. Pierre said in a media scrum. (Video courtesy of Fight Network)
St. Pierre acknowledged that in his last performance against Johny Hendricks, he had lost his passion for fighting, and his training camp suffered because of it.
“Mixed martial arts is a sport that when you compete, you need to be hungry. When you go in there, you have to have the feeling that you want to hurt the guy, and I lost that.”
The best case scenario for the former UFC Welterweight Champion would be to make a triumphant comeback at make it back to the top of the sport, right where he left off.
“You have the worst scenario and the best scenario. In the scenario that I decide to comeback, I’ll make sure that I have a great group that’s around me…. will make sure that I am tested in training. If I survive in training, they’ll let me fight.”
For those worried that the French-Canadian superstar would embarrass himself with a comeback, it looks as though we will either see St. Pierre return at the top of his game, or never at all.
