PFA Player’s Young Player of the Year nominees: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea), Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool), David de Gea (Manchester United), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)
The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have announced their six-man shortlists for the Barclays Premier League’s two main awards of the season; Players’ Player of the Year and Players’ Young Player of the Year.
PFA Award Nominees Announced
The lists read very similarly this year, with David de Gea of Manchester United, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool featuring on both lists after excellent seasons.
If the bookmakers are to be believed, Hazard, who has scored twelve goals and assisted eight in the 2014/15 Premier League, is the likely winner of the main award, with several listing him as short of 1/7 to claim the gong.
However, in the Young Players category, it looks like it will be Kane who takes home the prize; having scored 19 goals in 22 starts in the competition, there is every chance that the 21-year-old Englishman will end the season with the Golden Boot.
David de Gea’s excellent performances have bailed out Manchester United at times this season, and as a result, he features on the Players’ Player list ahead of his Chelsea counterpart Thibaut Courtois.
The Brazilian Coutinho, who features on both lists, has scored some outrageous goals for Liverpool this season, including thunderbolts against Southampton and Manchester City, and despite a record of just four goals and four assists in the league this term, his all-round contributions see him make both lists.
Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal looked an excellent bet for the main award before January, but his 2015 has been quieter in terms of goals scored, and as a result he may miss out.
Diego Costa signed for Chelsea in the summer and has been a key part of the side that looks set to secure the title with games to spare; his 19 goals put him joint-first with Kane in the race for the Golden Boot.
The final nominee, Raheem Sterling, has been in the media for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks; his escapades involving laughing gas and a shisha pipe have propelled him to the front pages of tabloid newspapers in Britain, and his public contract saga has shed a bad light on him. However, it is good to see him nominated after another excellent season.
Those who may consider themselves unfortunate to have missed out on a nomination include Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas, who has contributed sixteen assists despite an indifferent 2015, and Sergio Aguero of Manchester City, another Golden Boot candidate.
