Tottenham Talkline: Does Danny Rose Deserve More Credit?

Should Danny Rose get more credit? He may not be scoring 30 yard volleys, but he has put in some consistent performances this season.

Does Danny Rose deserve more credit? He isn’t quite Jordi Alba, but he is a solid Premier League left-back. Rose bombs up and down the wing, excelling in both his defensive duties and adventures further up the pitch. Is he being overshadowed by the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris?

Arguably, the position that Rose plays in isn’t one that steals the headlines. Usually, it’s Kane, Eriksen or Lloris on the back pages of most newspapers because these are the players that score, directly assist the scorer or save goals. However, Rose’s work is just as significant. It’s the invaluable width he provides in an otherwise narrow formation. It’s the last ditch tackles and interceptions. It’s those surging runs up the wing. Appreciated, but quickly forgotten. The full-backs of Tottenham certainly have an important role to play if Pochettino continues to use inverted wingers, and Rose does an exceptional job.

Rose has done well this season for Spurs, scoring against both Chelsea and West Ham in the Premier League, as well as creating 23 chances including four assists. In comparison to the rest of the team, Rose is the fifth highest chance creator in the team. Not bad for a left-back. Add to this a total of 0 defensive errors (according to Squawka) and things start looking rosy. All puns aside, Rose has achieved a lot this season, competing with Ben Davies for the left-back berth. That little bit of competition has really helped him kick on.

Has this good form been rewarded? Yes and no. Rose was called up to the last England squad after an injury to Luke Shaw, but then picked up injuries to his hip and hamstring, forcing him to withdraw. It was a shame, as Rose deserved to represent his country, but the injuries took it away from him. However, there is no need to feel disheartened, as Rose will undoubtedly be back amongst the England squad soon enough.

A diamond in the rough. That’s the best way to describe Rose compared to his defensive colleagues. It’s unfair to brand the entire defence as poor, as a few individuals have impressed. In fact, most of the defence have had at least one good game, but the trouble has been consistency. But in Rose’s case, this is untrue. He has been consistent, not perfect, but consistent. This is why he was called up to the England squad.

Many Spurs fans do rate Danny Rose and rightly so. The rest of the footballing community is yet to join in with the plaudits. Is it such a bad thing if Rose doesn’t get more credit? After all, how did it help Spurs keep hold of players like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric? Exactly, it didn’t. Rose is Tottenham’s secret hero and will serve Pochettino well if he chooses to keep the faith in him next season.
