The Montreal Canadiens mourn the loss of Dollard St-Laurent

MONTREAL – It is with great sadness that the Canadiens learned of the passing of Dollard St-Laurent in Beloeil on Monday. He was 85.

Originally from Verdun, St-Laurent got his start with the Canadiens in 1950-51 before playing his first full season in 1952-53. A defensive defenseman who could still pitch in on offense, it was during the 1952-53 season that St-Laurent won his first Stanley Cup.

Appreciated by his teammates, his most productive season came in 1957-58, when he tallied 23 points, including three goals.

St-Laurent played a total of 383 regular season games with the Habs, totaling 19 goals and 82 assists for a career 101-point haul, while also registering 306 penalty minutes.

The announcement puts the Canadiens family in mourning once again. It came only two days after the passing of 97-year-old former Canadiens star Elmer Lach. Also lost this season have been team legend Jean Beliveau and former coach Claude Ruel.

St. Laurent played eight seasons for Montreal in the 1950s, winning Stanley Cups in 1953, 1956, 1957 and 1958 before he was traded to the Blackhawks on June 3, 1958 for cash and future considerations. He won another Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1961.

The Verdun native had 29 goals and 133 assists in 652 games over 12 NHL campaigns. He had another two goals and 22 assists in 92 career playoff games.
