The show opens inside Dario Cueto’s office as we get a look at, not only the new Trios Championship belts, but also at Big Ryck’s new crew, his cousin The Mack and a masked man named Killshot.
Angelico vs Johnny Mundo
This one was a very fast paced match with both men utilizing their greatest asset, their kicks. No one took significant control through this match, as Mundo used his parkour skills to evade the long legs of Angelico, but the South African, Angelico was just as quick and stayed out of harms way in the early stages of the match.
Once the match spilled to the outside damage started taking its toll. Mundo took control for a spell, trying several signature moves like the Moonlight Drive and The End Of The World, but coming up short each time. Angelico almost had the match won after a crucifix powerbomb into the turnbuckles but Johnny was too close to the ropes. Angelico tried for a second powerbomb but Mundo managed to make it to the corner and after countering Angelico’s top rope hurricanrana attempt, hit The End Of The World for the win.
Edge: Johnny Mundo, but it was close. I almost called this one even but Johnny had a little more offence throughout, however, it says something about Angelico going toe to toe with a man who has been main eventing in Lucha Underground and challenging for the world title, and to be seen on an even playing field. At no time did it feel like Angelico was out of his league.
The story of Black Lotus unfolded further, giving viewers their first taste of her back story. We’ve seen other videos in the past but their was still not enough information to get the whole picture, until now. Lotus is hunting the “monster” that killed her parents and found him, but before she could act she was taken by a man named El Dragon Azteca. Azteca has claimed he was their when Black Lotus’ parents were killed and has offered to train her, to prepare her for the fateful day when she faces her past.
Backstage we see a meeting between Johnny Mundo and Alberto El Patron. The fans love El Patron, obviously, but I find it interesting during meetings like this that El Patron almost takes the heel role. Maybe I’m still too accustomed to his WWE personality, maybe it’s the cinematic ominous music, or maybe he really does have a big chip on his shoulder.
Dario Cueto had Sexy Star in his office telling her that, if nothing else, he is an equal opportunity employer. Dario wanted to include Sexy Star in the Trios tournament to crown the first Trios Champions, but her friends Pimpinela Escarlata and Mascarita Sagrata were still on the shelf. Being the great El Jefe, Cueto gave Sexy two new partners, Super Fly and Pentagon Jr.
Drago vs Aerostar Match 4 in a Best of 5 Series
Heading into this match it was do or die for Drago as Aerostar was ahead with two wins to one. It’s easy to see why these two were put in a best of five series, they have a great chemistry in the ring, and it’s refreshing to see an angle based on the spirit of competition, no heat, no feud, just sportsmanship.
The pace was quick with Aerostar showing off his balance, bouncing off the ropes onto Drago from all angles. Drago is no slouch in the ariel department either, but also showcased some high impact moves and unique submissions, but it was Drago’s tightly locked cradle that secured him the pinfall.
After a cautious and heated handshake the two had a staredown, when they meet again it will be do or die for both men.
Edge: Aerostar. Despite Drago getting the victory, Aerostar had more offense in this match. It almost seemed like Drago was hesitant at times, perhaps not wanting to make a mistake in such a critical match.
Dario Cueto has always prided himself on giving wrestlers “unique opportunities” but something he doesn’t talk about is how he likes to stir the pot. That was never more evident than when he told Angelica and the recently uncoupled Son Of Havoc and Ivelisse that they would be a team in the Trios Championship tournament, news that none of them took well.
Big Ryck, Killshot, The Mack vs Sexy Star, Super Fly, Pentagon Jr.
The first match in the 4 week Trios Championship tournament is already an important one as it has two Lucha Underground debuts in Killshot and The Mack. Pentagon started off by cutting a promo to his Master saying that despite his “weak partners” he would go on to win the Trios titles by himself.
As the action kicked off Matt Striker and Vampiro gave the viewers a brief history of Trios matches and how they differ from traditional North American six man tag team matches. Pentagon started things off with The Mack who, despite being a bit of a bigger guy showed some great agility in the ring. The Mack couldn’t quite compete with Pentagon Jr. though, and ate a couple of vicious chops in the corner.
Killshot made his way into the match, squaring off against Super Fly and then later against Sexy Star. The taller Killshot held his own against the two luchadores throwing back elbows and forearm smashes every chance he had.
Sexy’s team nearly secured the victory once they finally started working together, but Big Ryck put a stop to that and in the end his power, along with the teamwork of Mack and Killshot was too much and Super Fly was staring at the rafters.
Edge: Big Ryck, The Mack and Killshot. Despite having two new luchadores on the team, they proved that their chemistry was better than their opponents. Pentagon Jr. was so frustrated with his partners he tried to break Super Fly’s arm after the match, but Sexy Star put a stop to it which doesn’t bode well for the future of the feisty female luchador.
