Rolando McClain Re-signs with Cowboys

McClain is one of the more interesting characters in the NFL, at 25 he has signed with 3 different teams, retired and fell foul of the NFL’s substance abuse policies as recently as this offseason. The Dallas Cowboys acquired McClain’s contract off the Baltimore Ravens for a 6th round pick and the swapping of 7th rounders in the 2016 draft having never played a snap for the Ravens, retiring one month after signing a contract with them in 2013.

The Cowboys persuaded McClain to come out of retirement and played what many considered a strong season. Pro Football Focus has him graded as the 8th best inside linebacker last season, and graded out as one of the best against the run. While his run defense is not in debate his ability against the pass is, often being called a two down back, coming out of the game in passing situations.

The former 1st round pick, 8th overall started his career as an Oakland Raider but following a lack of form and demotion, a very public divorce occurred when McClain posted several inflammatory comments at the team on social media, following an incident which saw him removed from a team practice. In these comments McClain stated that he was “mentally done” and “no longer a Raider”.

While there is no denying that McClain had a strong season, recording 81 combined tackles, 2 interceptions a forced fumble and a sack in 13 games, issues surrounding his personality continue to linger. In February it was reported he had failed a drug test, the third in his career and faces a 4 game fine.

One more such infraction will see the troubled player face a 4 game suspension.
