FANTASY PROFILE: CARLOS GOMEZ, OF, MILWAUKEE BREWERS

LWOS Ranking #4, Captains’ Value: $26.05

Carlos Gomez, along with being a legitimate 5-tool player in real baseball, is one of those rare players that can positively contribute in all 5 standard fantasy baseball categories. He’s developed quite the baseline over the past three seasons, averaging 22 HR, 37 SB, 66 RBI, 82 R, and a .277 AVG. Known for being allergic to walks and prone to strikeouts, he has steadily improved in those departments over the past three seasons. In 2014 his OBP of .356 was a career high by almost twenty points.

It’s worth noting that all of Gomez’s power numbers (HR, ISO, SLG, HR/FB%) took a hit in 2014 compared to his 2013 numbers. Considering his age (he’ll be 29 on Opening Day 2015), this might suggest that 2013 was his peak in the power department. There was nothing drastic enough to suggest that he’ll go back to the single digit HR totals he was putting up pre-2012, so he’s still good for around 20 HR.

The only format in which Gomez is not a lock for the first round are points league that penalizes for strikeouts; and he’s still a top 35 player in those formats. He strikes out more than average, but not enough to hurt you in many other formats, as he will still hit at an above-average clip. If he is available past pick #5, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better all-around player than Carlos Gomez.
