The following press release comes from the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, and concerns the team’s newest player acquisition.
The move was foreshadowed by Earthquakes head coach Dominick Kinnear who talked about the fact that the team only had two goalkeepers on the roster, and that they were working out former Georgetown Hoyas’ keeper Tomas Gomez.
“We are the process of hopefully keeping Tomas here,” said Kinnear to reporters following Tuesday’s training session. “He’s been here long enough, and we like him, so we would like to add him to the mix.”
A pre-season injury to Keasel Broome, the Earthquakes pick in the 2015 MLS Superdraft made the signing of another young goalkeeper a priority for the club early in the 2015 MLS season.
Earthquakes Sign Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Tomas Gomez. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gomez, 22, was a four-year starter at Georgetown University, where he led the Hoyas to a 50-16-13 record from 2011-14. In 81 starts at Georgetown, Gomez made 251 saves, set a school record with 36 shutouts and recorded a 0.70 goals against average.
Gomez was named to the All-BIG EAST Conference team three times (2012-14), the All-Region team three times (2012-14), and was selected as the BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013.
He has also spent time with the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team.
Gomez originally entered MLS as a third-round selection (60th overall) by the Columbus Crew in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
