The only divas match on the WrestleMania 31 card sees former rivals AJ Lee and Paige teaming up to take on Nikki and Brie Bella.
WrestleMania doesn’t exactly have a tradition of incredible divas matches, if you look back at contests like Mickie James vs Trish Stratus back at WrestleMania 22 as one of the best, then Melina vs Ashley the following year was one of the worst.
Not the mention the battle royal at WrestleMania 25 that was won by a man dressed up as a woman, and last year’s battle royal that had the worst spot to fill on the entire card, following Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s streak. This doesn’t leave you much hope for this year’s tag match, and the apparent lack of trust that the WWE has in it’s divas.
This isn’t the first WrestleMania to not have the Divas Championship on the line, WrestleMania 29 didn’t even have a divas match on the card, so at least the women are being represented, and #GiveDivasAChance still seems to be working.
AJ Lee and Paige vs The Bella Twins
AJ Lee returned to the WWE a few weeks ago and was thrown straight into the action, as she saved her former enemy and rival for the Divas Championship, Paige.
The two have a storied history, with Paige being the only diva who was capable of defeating AJ and taking the Divas Championship away from her in her 295 day reign. Now, the two have formed an alliance that could well be tested by the current Divas Champion and her sister, Brie.
The Bella Twins themselves are not held together by the strongest of bonds after last year, Nikki turned on her sister at SummerSlam, and later won the match between the two, forcing Brie to be her personal assistant for 30 days, during which time she helped Nikki win the Divas Championship, and it seems all was forgiven.
This match has so much potential with both teams being combustible elements, and all four divas hoping to reign as Divas Champion.
There were many suggestions as to why this match wasn’t made into a fatal four way for the championship, because it doesn’t make any sense for divas that can’t trust each other to be forced into a tag team match that has nothing riding on it.
AJ and Paige want the Divas Championship and have the potential to have one of the best divas feuds of the decade if the WWE allows it. It seems that there is still a lot of heat on AJ from many in the WWE, especially judging by Nikki’s Smackdown promo, where she told AJ that Brock Lesnar had defended the WWE World Title more times than she did when she was champion.
Whether or not this was just to entice AJ ahead of Sunday’s showdown is currently unknown, but it seems as though following their brawl Monday night on Raw, AJ and Paige have put their problems behind them, and look set to knock The Bellas off of their throne on the grandest stage of them all.
The match itself doesn’t have anything riding on it, but the WWE could make it about more than just a title. There are so many women in that locker room who deserve time at WrestleMania, and again, they have been overlooked. The company could use this to their advantage, and allow all of the divas to be a part of the show.
Hopefully, the women’s roster has a better place on the card than last year, and this match is given the time that it deserves in order to see a decent story formed, and hopefully, many other divas rivalries are built up from this, so that the divas division has something to look forward to.
