AAA wrestler El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, real name Pedro Aguayo Ramirez passed away this morning after a freak accident in the ring against Rey Mysterio Jr. and Xtreme Tiger with tag partner Manik in Tijuana, Mexico. He was 35.
Current reports are that Aguayo suffered whiplash, either from the flying head scissors by Mysterio Jr. or afterwards from the dropkick that shoved him into the second rope. On the dropkick, the second rope repelled into Aguayo’s throat and trachea area, causing him to pass out immediately. The wrestlers tried to continue the match after, thinking maybe he was just out cold until Rey Mysterio Jr. checked up on him. He was eventually taken out of the ring.
Aguayo was taken to the nearby Del Prado hospital but was later pronounced dead in the early hours of March 21, 2015. Details are still early and often speculative.
Aguayo was the son of Lucha wrestling legend Perro Aguayo, one of the biggest stars in Lucha history along with El Santo and Mil Mascaras. “El Hijo Del” translates to “The Son Of”. Debuting in 1995, El Hijo del Perro Aguayo spent the first part of his career in Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) before moving to Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in 2003. He tried to start his own promotion in 2008 called Perros del Mal Producciones, named after his Los Perros del Mal faction in CMLL, soon using the promotion to lead an invasion into AAA in 2010. Since 2010 he has been one of the biggest stars in AAA, once wrestling unsuccessfully for the AAA World Heavyweight championship at Triplemania XX. Aguayo was Alberto El Patron (Del Rio)’s first major opponent in AAA, attacking El Patron and his father Dos Caras.
Viewer discretion on the video below. While it does not show anything graphic it is uncomfortable to watch knowing he passed away soon after.
There are currently a lot of unfortunate headlines across wrestling publications stating this as Rey Mysterio Jr. “killing” El Hijo de Perro Aguayo or being the cause of this, but as anyone in the professional wrestling industry could explain to you, this was nothing but an unfortunate accident. In the footage there is nothing that was done uncommon for either man or anyone in the situation. Our condolences to the family of Pedro Aguayo Ramirez and everyone involved.
