FANTASY PROFILE: Drew Stubbs, OF, Colorado Rockies
LWOS Ranking: 68, Captain’s Value: $5.78
Drew Stubbs is a player that has the proven ability to put up solid counting stats when he is given the opportunity at playing time. In 2014 with only 388 at bats, Stubbs managed to pile up 20 SBs and 15 HRs for the Rockies. In his two prior seasons of work, he averaged 12 HRs, and 23 SBs per season. While with the Reds from 2010 through 2012 Stubbs delivered an average of 15 HRs, and 29 SBs per season. A fantasy owner may ask why Stubbs is not a starting outfielder for the Rockies, and how has managed to play for 3 different teams in the past 4 seasons.
One factor that continues to keep Stubbs from regular starts is his in ability to be consistent and disciplined at the plate. Over the past 3 seasons his strikeout rate is extremely high at 30.6%, and he only has a 7.9% walk rate, which has led to his subpar .307 OBP. When looking at his splits from last season. Stubbs destroyed opposing pitching while batting in the mile high city at Coors posting a .356 BA, with 12 of his HRs, and a .999 OPS. In contrast he batted .211, with a .616 OPS on the road. Additionally he hits left handed pitching (.292 BA), far better than right handed pitching (.223 BA) over the past 3 seasons.
Stubbs has proven that he can put up both power and speed numbers when given enough at bats, however a fantasy owner may need to pick their spots to put him in the starting lineup (at home and against lefties) to minimize poor performances.
