Tramon Williams Signs with the Browns

On his 32nd Birthday, former Green Bay Packers cornerback Tramon Williams has agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Browns. The deal is for three years, but financial terms have not yet been announced.

“Tramon is a really good and consistent player,” Browns GM Ray Farmer said via a statement on the team’s website. “He has had success in this league because he’s a pro’s pro who believes great preparation leads to great performance. We are very happy to be able to sign a player of his caliber to our secondary.”

I wish Tramon Williams a Happy Birthday. With the pleasantries out of the way, he’s getting up there in years and defensive backs in their thirties can be gambles.

Looking at his career, he has performed better than most would have estimated. After being signed undrafted by the Houston Texans in 2006, he was picked up by the Packers shortly before the start of that season. From 2007 to 2009 he showed his worth, gradually earning a starting spot and delivering a Pro Bowl season in 2010, when the Packers won the Super Bowl.

At least two other teams had shown some interest in him; as he has visited the New Orleans Saints and discussed staying with the Packers, before ultimately choosing to sign with the Cleveland Browns. A more recent unconfirmed rumor had the Baltimore Ravens looking at Williams.

Williams has played well in Green Bay, but his age had caught up with him in the past two seasons. His speed has dropped noticeably, and he has blown important coverages, including a couple of key plays against the Seattle Seahawks during the 2014 NFC Championship. With that said he should be able to make an impact in the Browns secondary immediately, as he will be surrounded by Joe Haden, Dante Wittner, and Tashaun Gibson, three players who made the 2015 Pro Bowl.
